Lord’s Day Afternoon, July 31, 2022

“But as the days of Noe [Noah] were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be” (Matthew 24:37; p. 1034 Scofield).

Christ told His Disciples that they could tell the general time of His Second Coming and the end of this age. He gave them many signs. But the most important sign was given in our text:

“But as the days of Noe [Noah] were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be” (Matthew 24:37).

Christ told the Disciples that there would be a repetition of conditions before the Flood in the last days. He said, when you see conditions in the world like those in the days of Noah, then you will know that the end of the age and my second coming are very near.

Last time I spoke on three of the similarities between our day and the days of Noah. I showed that there was

1. Apostasy – and that we have a similar apostasy today.

2. Increased travel – and that we have increased travel today.

3. Most people committing the unpardonable sin – and that many people commit the unpardonable sin today.

Now, I want you to think about three more points where the days of Noah are similar to our time.

(1) Multiple marriages.

(2) Demonization on a widespread scale.

(3) Continual evil thought patterns.

I. First, there were multiple marriages in Noah’s day.

The verse following our text says:

“For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark” (Matthew 24:38; p. 1034).

Matthew Henry points out that,

They were unreasonable in it [eating, drinking, marrying and giving in marriage], inordinate and entire in the pursuit of the delights of the sense, and the gains of the world; they were wholly taken up with these things (Matthew Henry’s Commentary, note on Matthew 24:38).

Now turn with me to Genesis, chapter four, verse nineteen:

“And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah” (Genesis 4:19; p. 11).

The emphasis on marriage in Noah’s day, spoken of by Jesus, went so far that people began marrying more than one wife. Lamech was the very first man in history to break God's law and marry a second wife.

Jesus quoted Genesis 2:24 when He spoke to the Pharisees:

“Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, and said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain [two] shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder” (Matthew 19:4-6; p. 1025).

“Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery”
     (Matthew 19:9; p. 1025).

Divorce was almost unheard of when I was a child. It was very uncommon. It was a great shame, a scandal, back then. But divorce has grown so that no one seems to notice any more. In fact, many young people don’t even bother to get married today. They just move in together and live together.

You must understand that all of this is a repetition of what happened back in the days of Noah. America is being flooded with a whole generation of young people who have never known the joy of a happy home. The breakup of the home is the greatest single factor behind the rise in crime, drug use, alcoholism, sex perversion, abortion, and many other social problems. No other factor has contributed more to the breakdown of our culture. Dr. M. R. DeHaan said,

Never before in history since the days before the flood, has this condition existed so generally, and it is undoubtedly this that the Lord referred to when He said, “As it was in the days before the flood, so shall it be also in the days of the coming of the Son of man” (M. R. DeHaan, M.D., The Days of Noah, Zondervan, 1971, p. 44).

II. Second, demonization occurred on a wide-spread scale.

Turn with me to Genesis, chapter six, verse one:

“And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown” (Genesis 6:1-4; p. 13).

The usual explanation of this passage is that the sons of God were the godly descendants of Seth, and the daughters of men were the descendants of Cain. The Scofield note on Genesis 6:4 presents this view. But Dr. M. R. DeHaan points out four reasons that this view is incorrect (ibid., p. 141). Here are two of them:

(1) Were all the descendants of Seth females and those of Cain males? Were all the descendants of Seth believers and all the descendants of Cain unbelievers?

(2) How do we account for the birth of giants, men of great stature and unusual intelligence, as a result of the union of unbelievers with believers?… When a Christian marries an unsaved person, their children are no different from any other children (physically, emotionally or mentally). One’s faith has no physical effect on one’s offspring. How then do we account for the fact that the offspring of this union in Genesis 6 were these monstrosities called giants?

Dr. DeHaan said, “These facts alone make the generally accepted explanation quite untenable. We therefore hold that this sin…was a supernatural union between fallen angels [demons] and the children of men, with the resultant birth of monstrosities called giants…” (ibid., p. 142).

In Job, chapter one we discover who the “sons of God” were:

“Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them” (Job 1:6; p. 569).

Then in Job, chapter two, verse one, we read the same thing:

“Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them” (Job 2:1; p. 570).

In these verses the angels were called “sons of God” and Satan was among them. This means that Satan and all the fallen angels were created by God, they were His creation, before they sinned. That is why Satan and the fallen angels are called “the sons of God” in these verses in the Book of Job.

Now look at Genesis 6:4. The word translated “giants” is from the Hebrew word “nephilim,” which means “fallen ones.” Their name is another indication that there is a reference to fallen angels here.

Dr. Merrill F. Unger, late professor of Old Testament at Dallas Theological Seminary, also took this position. He said:

This means that it was when angelic beings had united with human daughters that the nephilim appeared on earth…Fallen angels can in a manner incomprehensible to man in the natural realm assume maleness and have sexual intercourse with females of the human species. Occult literature is replete with such suprahuman phenomena illustrating the general lawlessness of occultism… (Merrill F. Unger, Ph.D., Unger’s Commentary on the Old Testament, Moody Press, 1981, volume I, p. 37).

The Bible tells us of “the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation” (Jude 6). In the next verse we are told that they went “after strange flesh.” That makes it clear that Dr. Unger’s evaluation is on the right track. Personally I believe that demon-possessed men are most likely what is referred to in Genesis 6:1-4. Jesus said:

“But as the days of Noe [Noah] were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be” (Matthew 24:37).

It doesn’t take a spiritual giant to see that Satan is repeating what he did in the days of Noah. The Devil is leading people into corruption, the occult and the abuse of sex. This leads many to become demonized today. Through pornography, the occult and immoral sexual activity, demons gain control over people’s lives, just as they did in the days of Noah.

III. Third, there was continuous evil thought in Noah’s day.

Please turn to Genesis chapter six, verse five:

“And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually” (Genesis 6:5; p. 13).

Dr. Unger says:

The depth of man’s wickedness is revealed by what has already been described – the invasion of the sphere of the natural by the realm of evil supernaturalism… occultism…Satan and demonic powers first captured the thinking process and then dominated the conduct of the antediluvians” (Unger, op. cit., p. 37).

The Bible tells us that Satan and demonic powers capture the thinking and then dominate the conduct of people today. In fact, the Bible teaches that every unconverted person is demonically influenced. Satan is called “the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience” (Ephesians 2:2). If God gives up on you, you will be exactly like those people before the Flood. If God lets go of you, “every imagination of the thoughts of [your] heart [will be] only evil continually” (cf. Genesis 6:5).

Satan has already blinded your mind so you do not believe the gospel and trust Christ savingly.

“But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world [Satan] hath blinded the minds of them which believe not…” (II Corinthians 4:3-4; p. 1232).

There is very definitely something demonic about your rejection of the gospel. You stay in a lost condition because you have become a puppet – with Satan pulling the strings. Soon Satan will be tired of using you as a toy, and he will then toss you aside, like a child throws away an old plaything. When the Devil gets tired of pulling the strings, you will no longer be his puppet. You will then be cast into Hell – to burn in everlasting torment.

I say that you are a fool to go on as the Devil’s puppet. Look at your heart – full of pride and sin. Look at your mind – full of darkness and evil thoughts. Look at your life – it isn’t going anywhere without God. Look at your future – it is hopeless without Christ.

I am going to ask you to examine your heart and life, and give up all hope of saving yourself. And then I am asking you to turn from your sins and come to Jesus Christ, the Son of God. He is alive in Heaven. Turn to Christ and He will wash your sins away with His Blood – and He will set you free from domination by the demonic. Christ has come to save you and deliver you. Turn to Him and believe on Him fully now! Then you will sing,

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.
(“Amazing Grace” by John Newton, 1725-1807).
