The purpose of this website is to provide free sermon manuscripts and sermon videos to pastors and missionaries throughout the world, especially the Third World, where there are few if any theological seminaries or Bible schools.

These sermon manuscripts and videos now go out to about 1,500,000 computers in over 221 countries every year at www.sermonsfortheworld.com. Hundreds of others watch the videos on YouTube, but they soon leave YouTube and come to our website. YouTube feeds people to our website. The sermon manuscripts are given in 46 languages to about 120,000 computers each month. The sermon manuscripts are not copyrighted, so preachers can use them without our permission. Please click here to learn how you can make a monthly donation to help us in this great work of preaching the Gospel to the whole world.

Whenever you write to Dr. Hymers always tell him what country you live in, or he cannot answer you. Dr. Hymers’ e-mail is rlhymersjr@sbcglobal.net.

HOW TO AVOID BEING A “MIXED MULTITUDE”

by Dr. R. L. Hymers, Jr.,
Pastor Emeritus

A lesson taught at the Baptist Tabernacle of Los Angeles
Lord’s Day Afternoon, December 13, 2020

Hymn Sung Before the Lesson:
     “Take Time to Be Holy” (by William D. Longstaff, 1822-1894;
     stanzas 2, 3 and 4).

Dr. Lin said, “When the Hebrews left Egypt, ‘a mixed multitude went up with them’ (Exodus 12:38; p. 85 Scofield). This mixed multitude caused the Israelites great sorrow and suffering later (Numbers 11:1-5; p. 181). Although they were physically present in the desert, their hearts were still in Egypt. Their focus was on earthly things. Self-gratification became their goal…They kept yelling, ‘Give me!’ ‘Give me!’” (Lin, p. 37).

“Their rebellion caused the Hebrews to weep…God was so angry with the mixed multitude that He wanted to wipe out the whole nation of Israel.”

Why did this mixed multitude follow the Hebrews out of Egypt in the first place? Many of them went with their friends. Others went because they thought they would have more fun. Some of them went because they thought it would be an adventure. All of the “mixed multitude” rebelled against Moses, their leader.

What was wrong with the “mixed multitude”? They were unconverted. The Scofield center note (e) on page 85 of the Scofield Bible gives the answer clearly.

The mixed multitude stands for unconverted church members, and was a source of weakness and division, then and now. (Scofield note (e) on page 85 of the Scofield Study Bible).

A further note on the mixed multitude is found on page 181 of the Scofield Bible, center note (e). Please turn to Numbers 11:4-6 (p. 181).

“And the mixt multitude that was among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat? We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick: But our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes” (Numbers 11:4-6; p. 181).

The Scofield note says,

Unconverted church members, unable to desire Christ…will clamor for things pleasing to the flesh…in the church [such as “easy doctrine”]. Alas! they lead away the unspiritual believers also (Scofield note (e), p. 181).

It doesn’t take a genius to figure this out! The manna was a type of Christ. The foods in Egypt were a type of what the world had to offer. The “mixed multitude” was not satisfied with Jesus (the manna). They wanted what the lost world in Egypt had! Things that pleased their flesh, because they did not want Jesus (the bread of life).

How did a “mixed multitude” get into our church in the first place? We had hoped they would be converted, but nearly all of them never were. So, after several years, there were about 2/3 more “mixed multitude” people than converted Christians among us. They wanted “feelings” not Jesus. They wanted worldly pleasures, not Christ.

What could we do? We kept preaching the Gospel. But they kept rejecting the Gospel! What else could we do? In the early Church, God killed Ananias and Sapphira. But we could not “kill” the mixed multitude among us. That is why God sent a church split – to clean out the “mixed multitude”! Please turn to II Corinthians 6:14-18 (p. 1234). Stand as I read it.

“Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty” (II Corinthians 6:14-18).

You may be seated.

So I started preaching on “culture.” As I bore down hard on the culture of the “mixed multitude” some key people played the “race card.” Abel Prudhomme said I had become a racist! Even though I never once spoke against the black people, Abel Prudhomme said I had become a racist! Mrs. Olivacce said I was a racist because I told her that her father trusted God instead of Christ. She said I was “too strict.” Come on, lady! I am a Baptist preacher. We are all supposed to believe that Jesus Christ is the Saviour – not God the Father! So, to her, I became a “racist” for preaching the Gospel! Jesus said, “No man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6; p. 1135). I was not a racist for preaching Jesus as the only way to be saved! What madness! The Lewises and the Matsusakas also left. It seems to me that they got their theology from Black Lives Matter, rather than the New Testament!!!

But I did not try to help them. I had been preaching the Gospel of Christ for over 62 years and I had no intention of becoming a Christ-denying heretic! – a Jehovah’s Witness or a Unitarian, for there is

“one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (I Timothy 2:5; p. 1275).

“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12; p. 1153).

That is the Gospel, which I was ordained to preach. And I will never be ashamed to preach the Gospel of salvation through Christ’s Blood atonement on the Cross for our sins – by anyone, even if it’s Black Lives Matter that comes against me!

These are the names of the “mixed multitude” who split our church because they did not want Jesus!

None of these names should ever be allowed to even visit our new church.

Dr. Cagan will keep a list of their names and never allow any of them to visit our church again.

Please stand and turn to Romans 16:17-20,

“Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple. For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil. And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen” (Romans 16:17-20; p. 1210).

Now turn to II Corinthians 6:14-18 as you remain standing.

Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty” (II Corinthians 6:14-18; p. 1234).

“The man that wandereth out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead” (Proverbs 21:16; p. 687).

If we are very careful not to allow any unsaved or rebellious people to join our new church, we will not have another horrible church split like this in the future.

“See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God, and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many” (Hebrews 12:15 NIV).

Sing our hymn!

    Take time to be holy, The world rushes on;
Much time spend in secret With Jesus alone.
     By looking to Jesus, Like Him thou shalt be;
Thy friends in thy conduct His likeness shall see.

     Take time to be holy, Let Him be thy Guide;
And run not before Him, Whatever betide.
     In joy or in sorrow, Still follow thy Lord,
And, looking to Jesus, Still trust in His Word.

     Take time to be holy, Be calm in thy soul,
Each thought and each motive Beneath His control.
     Thus led by His Spirit To fountains of love,
Thou soon shalt be fitted For service above.
     (“Take Time to Be Holy” by William D. Longstaff, 1822-1894;
         stanzas 2, 3 and 4).
