THE RAGING NATIONS – AND THE LOVING SAVIOUR!

by Dr. R. L. Hymers, Jr.

A sermon preached at the Baptist Tabernacle of Los Angeles
Lord’s Day Morning, November 24, 2019

“Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure. Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him” (Psalm 2:1-12; pp. 599-600 Scofield).

This is the first of the Messianic Psalms. It speaks as a prophecy of this present dispensation. It speaks of Christ’s first coming to His Second Coming too.

Part one – the raging of the nations of heathendom.

“Why do the heathen [nations] rage, and the people imagine a vain [empty] thing?” (Psalm 2:1).

This is a picture of the depravity of mankind. From the moment that Jesus was born, the nations have raged against Him. From the quotation of this verse in Acts 4 we learn,

“Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things? The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ. For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together”
        (Acts 4:25-27; p. 1154).

Against the Lord, and against his anointed [Jesus].” This shows that the raging nations began when He was born, and King Herod tried to kill Him in Bethlehem. And the nations will continue to rage against Jesus until He comes the second time at the end of this age. Christ and His followers have been a persecuted minority in this world. The world is against Christ. David says that the nations rage because they are against Jesus Christ, God’s Anointed One. The modern evangelical church shows horrible conformity with a Christ-rejecting world. From the liberal West to the Islamic extremists in the East, Christ is misrepresented and attacked viciously, as you can see by reading the newspapers.

This is a part of Satan’s strategy. The wars and turmoil, and starvation, and revolutions, the apostasy in the churches, the false prophets and false Christs, and the near breakup of civilization are signs of this innate hatred of the Christ of the Bible, and God Himself! The Bible predicts “upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity” (Luke 21:25; p. 1106). It is true today, that the great scientific knowledge of our time should produce weapons of destruction capable of wiping out civilization as we know it! In America, God has allowed us to have a great President, Donald Trump. But the President is hated! Why is he hated so much? I believe it is because he has stood rock solid for tolerance of Christians, and he is the most pro-life President we have ever had. No one but Abraham Lincoln has taken a greater stand for religious freedom and the right to life of all our citizens. And yet they hate him. They hate him as they hate the great Christians who founded our country in the first place!

The enemies of Christ rage against the Founding Fathers, the Puritans, and anyone who takes a stand for God and Christ! You know full well what they teach in the high schools and universities today.

The number one movie being watched by our young people is “Joker.” It is a filthy, disgusting movie about a maniac who becomes demon-possessed and goes on a killing spree. That is what Hollywood is puking out into the minds of our young people. And then we wonder why one student after another takes guns and murders other students! It’s not the National Rifle Association that needs to be banned. It is these God-hating, Christ-denying anarchists in Hollywood and in Congress that need to be banned!

“Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain [and empty] thing?”

“Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us” (Psalm 2:1-3; p. 599).

It is all through our society, from screeching rock music to demonic movies like “Joker.” The voice of anarchy and socialism is drowning out the voice of our God and His Christ! And some older people are afraid of a true church like this. They are afraid we will brainwash their children! I say their children need to be brainwashed and heartwashed by the Blood of Christ, shed on the Cross to cleanse us from our sin!!!

What is God’s response? What does God think of us and our false way of life? Look at verse four,

“He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision” (Psalm 2:4; p. 599).

I think God is laughing in contempt at the madness of this world of ours. Jesus Christ said,

“Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken” (Luke 21:26; p. 1106).

Jesus spoke of “the last days” and the “end of the age.” Christ spoke of His Second Coming. When Christ returns there will be “distress of nations, with perplexity” (Luke 21:25; p. 1106). The word “distress” in the Greek original means “pressed on all sides.” The word “perplexity” means “no way out.” We could paraphrase it like this – “on earth the nations pressed on all sides, with no way out.” The pressures are from all sides. One crisis after the other is driving statesmen into a frenzy of perplexity. Now it is Central America. Then the crisis is in the Middle East. Then it moves to North Korea, then back to Israel and the Arabs. Conferences, meetings of the leaders, ambassadors running from one conference to another. Nations in distress and perplexity – pressed on all sides with no way out!!! No wonder God laughs in mockery at the way our world is today!!!

Mankind says of God and Christ, “Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us” (Psalm 2:3). So depraved man dreams of sending men to Mars in a few years! What if we did go to Mars? What would we take there? We would take there the same pressures on all sides, with no way out, that we have created on earth! That’s what we would take! After thousands of years of so-called “progress” – our world is in the worst mess of all time!

We have spent billions of dollars in an empty attempt to bring peace without Christ, the Prince of Peace! The description of the nations in perplexity given in Psalm 2 fits this generation in every detail! The wisdom of man is foolishness with God. No wonder He laughs us to scorn!

There is only one way out from the deadness of this world. Christ said, “When these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh” (Luke 21:28; p. 1106). The Second Coming of Christ is the only answer to the problem of this old world of ours!

What will God do? Verses 6 to 11 tell us what God will do!

“Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling” (Psalm 2:6-11; p. 600).

Admit that we don’t have the answers. Admit that God is the sovereign ruler! “Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling” (Psalm 2:11).

Christ will come down from Heaven and bring peace at last to our troubled, frightened world!

Now look at verse 12. Stand as I read it.

“Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him” (Psalm 2:12; p. 600).

What a wonderful way to end this prophetic Psalm – “Kiss the Son.”

The Son of God is Jesus. Kiss Him. Trust Him. He died on the Cross to pay the full penalty for all your sins. He rose from the dead to give you eternal life. All He asks is that we trust Him. And Jesus says to you this morning,

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest”
        (Matthew 11:28; p. 1011).

Jesus will give you rest. Jesus will save you from all your fears and heartaches. Jesus will give you eternal life.

I know Jesus will do that for you. How do I know? Because Jesus did that for me! I did not come from a Christian home. I was lost and lonely. Then one morning I trusted Jesus only. He pardoned my sin and gave me eternal life. I know He will do that for you, too. Ask my two sons. They know that what I’ve told you is true of me. I am an old man now, and I can say to you, put all your trust in Jesus. He will save you and give you peace and eternal life.

Dr. Cagan will be here to help you trust Christ and be saved by Him. As we leave this service, why not come here and speak with this gentle pastor, Dr. Cagan, and let him pray for you. Jesus said, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16; p. 1117).

Come up here and speak with Dr. Cagan and he will pray for you!
