Print Sermon

The purpose of this website is to provide free sermon manuscripts and sermon videos to pastors and missionaries throughout the world, especially the Third World, where there are few if any theological seminaries or Bible schools.

These sermon manuscripts and videos now go out to about 1,500,000 computers in over 221 countries every year at www.sermonsfortheworld.com. Hundreds of others watch the videos on YouTube, but they soon leave YouTube and come to our website. YouTube feeds people to our website. The sermon manuscripts are given in 46 languages to about 120,000 computers each month. The sermon manuscripts are not copyrighted, so preachers can use them without our permission. Please click here to learn how you can make a monthly donation to help us in this great work of preaching the Gospel to the whole world.

Whenever you write to Dr. Hymers always tell him what country you live in, or he cannot answer you. Dr. Hymers’ e-mail is rlhymersjr@sbcglobal.net.

THE MINISTRY OF JOHN THE BAPTIST AND YOU

by Dr. R. L. Hymers, Jr.

A sermon preached at the Baptist Tabernacle of Los Angeles
Saturday Evening, August 17, 2019

1. The work of John the Baptist, John 1:6-8 (p. 1114 Scofield). Please stand as I read it.

“There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light” (John 1:6-8).

It is the same work we are to do, John 1:29, 35-37. It is a witness to Jesus given to the lost, John 1:10. It is a witness that will be rejected by most people, John 1:11. It is a witness that they will not receive, John 1:11. It is a witness that some will hear and receive Jesus, John 1:12.

2. Those who receive Jesus are born again, John 1:13.

1.  Not of blood (not inherited)
2.  Nor of the will of the flesh (not by wanting to be a Christian)
3.  Nor of the will of man (not by another person)
4.  But of God, see Romans 8:11; Ephesians 2:4-5.
5.  By believing in Jesus, a person is born again, John 3:3-7 (p. 1117);
      John 3:15-18 (pp. 1117, 1118).
6.  The reason most people will not believe in Jesus, John 3:19-20
      (p. 1118); John 3:27 (p. 1118); Ephesians 2:8-9 (p. 1251);
      Matthew 7:21-23 (p. 1004).
7.  Their minds are blinded by the god of this world, Satan,
      II Corinthians 4:3-4 (p. 1232). God Himself has to open the sinner’s heart,
      Acts 16:14 (p. 1171).

The work of John the Baptist was to tell people about Christ, the Light of the World, John 1:29 (p. 1115).

The whole world was lost in the darkness of sin,
   The Light of the world is Jesus;
Like sunshine at noonday His glory shone in,
   The Light of the world is Jesus.
Come to the light, ’tis shining for thee;
   Sweetly the light has dawned upon me;
Once I was blind, but now I can see;
   The Light of the world is Jesus!
(“The Light of the World is Jesus” by Philip P. Bliss, 1838-1876).

The work God calls you and me to do is the same as John the Baptist.

“Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world” (John 1:29; p. 1115).

That must be our work. Dr. Lin’s church grew from about 60 people to over 2,000 members. What method did Dr. Lin use? He told us to bring one person to church with us. Get to know the person and talk about Jesus with enthusiasm. Then bring that person to church. Drive that person here yourself. Sit with that person in church. You will be surprised what God will do in the next months and years!

Bring one in, bring one in,
   Bring one in from the field of sin;
Bring one in, bring one in,
   Bring the wand’ring one to Jesus.
(“Bring Them In” by Alexcenah Thomas, 19th century;
     altered by Dr. Hymers).

Win one for the Lord,
   Win one for the Lord,
God, help me to do so,
   Win one for the Lord.
(“Win One for the Lord”).
