Print Sermon

The purpose of this website is to provide free sermon manuscripts and sermon videos to pastors and missionaries throughout the world, especially the Third World, where there are few if any theological seminaries or Bible schools.

These sermon manuscripts and videos now go out to about 1,500,000 computers in over 221 countries every year at www.sermonsfortheworld.com. Hundreds of others watch the videos on YouTube, but they soon leave YouTube and come to our website. YouTube feeds people to our website. The sermon manuscripts are given in 46 languages to about 120,000 computers each month. The sermon manuscripts are not copyrighted, so preachers can use them without our permission. Please click here to learn how you can make a monthly donation to help us in this great work of preaching the Gospel to the whole world.

SIGNS OF THE END!

by Dr. R. L. Hymers, Jr.

A sermon preached at the Baptist Tabernacle of Los Angeles
Saturday Evening, January 19, 2019

“And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?” (Matthew 24:3).

Here are the general signs.

1. False Christs shall deceive many (24:5).

I have come to believe that these “false Christs” are demons which either possess or deceive spiritual leaders on earth (see Merrill F. Unger, “Biblical Demonology and Eschatology,” in Biblical Demonology, Kregel Publications, 1994, pp. 201-213).

False teachers, deacons, and even some pastors are under demonic control, “giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron” (I Timothy 4:1, 2).

“Many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ” refers, I believe, to demons who deceive church leaders and lead them to split churches and attack those who are godly.

Jesus put these deceiving spirits first because they are the main way of attacking churches in these last days. Here is an e-mail I received from a man who left our church. He said,

“We are leaving as a matter of principle...and none of us will ever try to take people out of [your] church.”

Yet a few days later he wrote an e-mail to a young girl that he tricked to leave our church. Here is what he wrote to her,

Dear sweepea, I miss you very much, I love you very much. If they say bad things about me, I think you know me better than that. And you know Emi better than that. You are still my goddaughter, no matter what. Merry Christmas, sweepea.

The Bible says, “by good words and fair speeches [they] deceive the hearts of the simple” (Romans 16:18). Since this girl was not yet converted, she was deceived and left our church to attend Kreighton Chan’s cult. That’s why Jesus put deception as the first thing in His list of “signs.”

2. Wars and rumours of wars (24:6).

Dr. John F. Walvoord said, “The twentieth century itself has had two world wars and almost continual warfare in one part of the world or another” (Major Bible Prophecies, p. 455). Many have said that World War I was the beginning of the last days before the second coming of Christ.

3. Famines (24:7).

You can hardly turn on the television without seeing graphic pictures of famine wiping out millions of people every year.

4. Pestilences (24:7).

Dr. Walvoord said, “New forms of disease require much medical research before being brought under control” (ibid.).

5. Earthquakes (24:7).

Dr. Walvoord said, “cities of the Gentiles, will be leveled and there will be tremendous loss of life and property just before the Second Coming” (ibid.).

Then Jesus said, “All these are the beginning of sorrows” (v. 8) – birthpangs of the last days.

6. Martyrdom and persecution (24:9, 10).

Millions have died because of their faith in Christ, predicted here by Jesus Himself.

7. False prophets deceive many (24:11).

Dr. Walvoord said, “This has caused widespread confusion” (ibid., p. 256). One of the great confusions has been the widespread preaching of “Decisionism” – first introduced by the false prophet, Charles G. Finney. Thousands of evangelicals think they are saved because they made a decision, without being converted (see our book Today’s Apostasy).

8. Lawlessness and coldness in evangelical churches (24:12).

It makes me sick at heart to see so many church splits as a result of lawlessness in our churches. Every Christian ought to read Church Split by Dr. Roy Branson. Dr. Walvoord said, “This will occur in the aftermath of false doctrine. It is all too evident that many who profess the name of Christ are worldly...they have lapsed into a state of lukewarmness” (ibid.).

“But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.” Living in the last days is extremely difficult. But those who are truly rooted and grounded in Christ will endure.

9. The Gospel preached in all the world (24:14).

We have a website that brings the Gospel to the world in over forty languages. Yet some of our people don’t realize that is why Satan has bitterly attacked our inner city church with a horrible series of church splits – with one man attacking me like a raging lion, another man posting obscene pictures on his website, and a third man plotting carefully to destroy our work among the Chinese.

People sometimes ask me how my wife and I keep on under these truly horrible circumstances in the civic center of Los Angeles. I can only say it is by the sheer grace of God that we take our stand daily on the Word of God, “the holy scriptures, which are able” to keep us on the right track, preaching the Gospel of Christ amid this demonized age!

Please stand and sing hymn number 2 on your song sheet, “He is Coming Again.”

Lift up your heads, pilgrims a-weary,
   See day’s approach now crimson the sky;
Night shadows flee, and your Beloved,
   Awaited with longing, at last draweth nigh.
He is coming again, He is coming again,
   The very same Jesus, rejected of men;
He is coming again, He is coming again,
   With power and great glory, He is coming again!

Dark was the night, sin warred against us;
   Heavy the load of sorrow we bore;
But now we see signs of His coming;
   Our hearts glow within us, joy’s cup runneth o’er!
He is coming again, He is coming again,
   The very same Jesus, rejected of men;
He is coming again, He is coming again,
   With power and great glory, He is coming again!

Even so, come, precious Lord Jesus;
   Creation waits redemption to see;
Caught up in clouds, soon we shall meet Thee;
   O blessed assurance, forever with Thee!
He is coming again, He is coming again,
   The very same Jesus, rejected of men;
He is coming again, He is coming again,
   With power and great glory, He is coming again!
(“He is Coming Again” by Mabel Johnston Camp, 1871-1937).
