WHY WE SHALL WIN THIS BATTLE ALSO

Early in my ministry, even before I was called to preach, God gave me my life verse, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” (Philippians 4:13). For over 60 years I have found that promise to be true.

Across six decades I have faced many challenges and setbacks. But I have always won every battle because I was always completely dependent on Jesus Christ.

There was the fight for the inerrancy of the Bible, in which I had to stand against the false teachers in my seminary. I won that battle because I depended completely on Christ.

There was the fight over the horribly blasphemous Hollywood movie, “The Last Temptation of Christ.” I won that battle because I depended completely on Jesus Christ.

Then there was the battle against abortion. John Cagan said, “Dr. Hymers led his church in an all-out fight to close down two abortion clinics. He did not stop until both clinics were closed forever.” I stood with Jesus, and we won that battle because Christ was with us.

Then there was the battle to save our church. Mr. Olivas took out 320 of our members and we almost lost this building. I was able to win this battle too, because “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”

Also there was the battle to take the Gospel to the entire world. Today our website has 1.5 million people read my sermons in over 221 countries of the world in 40 languages – because, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”

In a time when many preachers try to build up their churches by “stealing” members from other churches, I have been enabled to win lost people from the world. Why? Because “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” That’s why!

President Theodore Roosevelt said, “It is not the critic who counts, not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena…whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood…who spends himself in a worthy cause, who at best knows in the end the triumphs of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.”

John Cagan said, “Dr. Hymers knows by long experience that the only sure foundation on which to build one’s life is the Solid Rock – the man Christ Jesus.”

My son Leslie said, “Only a few people have understood my father, because he doesn’t think like the average man. He walks with God…Read my father’s story. It will stir your soul, and you will understand why I told him to write it.”

I have triumphed in every single battle I have encountered for one single reason – “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” That is why we have this church. That is why, when I asked those who were saved under my preaching and counselling to stand, nearly every person in our church stood up.

My faithful partner and friend, Dr. Christopher L. Cagan, said, “Dr. Hymers is a man who stumbled, bruised and broken, to pick himself up and overcome enormous obstacles to show people that Jesus Christ can help them too.”

Dr. Edi Purwanto said, “When God is with a man, he cannot be defeated. Dr. Hymers is a hero who has survived many deadly wars.”

Dr. Robert L. Sumner said, “I appreciate and admire a man who is willing to take a stand for the truth, even when all the odds are against him. Robert Leslie Hymers, Jr. is that kind of a Christian.”

Dr. Kent Philpott said, “Dr. Hymers was the best preacher any one of us had ever heard, a genuine ‘old time guy.’ His focus has [always] been the message of Christ.”

Dr. Neal Weaver said, “Dr. Hymers is one courageous man, who has strong convictions and is unafraid to fight for those convictions against all odds. That man is my good friend, Dr. R. L. Hymers, Jr.”

Dr. Phil Goble said, “…follow this great champion preacher [Dr. Hymers] out into the gladiatorial modern world to fight, like him, the good fight of faith.”
