DISCIPLES AND DEMONS

A sermon written by Dr. R. L. Hymers, Jr.
and preached by Rev. John Samuel Cagan
at the Baptist Tabernacle of Los Angeles
Lord’s Day Morning, July 22, 2018

This is the third study we are giving on Christ training His Disciples. As we follow Jesus in training them, we learn how to train disciples today.

Jesus did not train His Disciples the way our churches attempt to train young people today. We should pay close attention to the way Jesus made disciples, because He was very successful, and our churches usually fail. One of the mistakes today is to attempt to get our disciples converted before we teach them to be disciples. But Jesus spent three years teaching His Disciples, before they were born again (John 20:22; see J. Vernon McGee and Thomas Hale). That is a major difference between what Jesus did, and what we attempt to do today.

Another major difference is in the subjects Christ taught them. At the very beginning Jesus called them and said, “I will make you fishers of men” (Mark 1:17). He trained them with one major purpose – to make them able to help others become disciples. Jesus told them that was His goal at the very beginning. And that is my goal as well. I am not here to teach you Bible stories, as they do in Sunday School today. My goal is to teach you to become soul winners, to bring others to follow Christ and win lost souls. Christ told them that at the very beginning (see Mark 1:16-20).

The second thing Christ taught them was how to deal with Satan and his demons. Look at Mark 1:21-27.

“And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught. And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes. And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him. And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him” (Mark 1:21-27).

Look up. The second thing Christ taught His first four Disciples was about His power over Satan and his demons. The Reformation Study Bible (page 290) says,

The demons are fallen angels...serving Satan. Having joined Satan’s rebellion, they were cast out of heaven...Satan’s army of demons [use] deception and discouragement in many forms. To oppose them is the task of spiritual warfare (Ephesians 6:10-18).

As a new disciple, Jesus wants you to know about Satan and his demons. One of the men Jesus encountered was demon possessed. In the King James Bible the Greek word for demons is translated “devils.” Look at Mark 1:39,

“And he [Jesus] preached in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and cast out devils” (Mark 1:39).

As you become a disciple of Jesus, you must become aware of the demons around you. Demons blind people to the truth given in the Bible. Demons will try to scare you and get you to stop coming to our church. Demons will try to keep you from becoming a Christian. Dr. Thomas Hale said,

We must remember that demon possession is not a form of mental disease. Demons or evil spirits, are servants of the chief demon, Satan. They are workers of evil. When they come into a man, they make him a prisoner or slave of Satan. Only through the power of Jesus can these demons be overcome and the man be given freedom (Thomas Hale, M.D., The Applied New Testament Commentary; note on Mark 1:21-28).

People become demon possessed through drug abuse, the occult, and other forms of deep rebellion against God.

“Well,” someone says, “I have not taken drugs, I have not participated in the occult, I have not done these things.” I’m glad you haven’t gone this far in sin. But nevertheless, your mind has been worked on (energized) by “the prince of the power of the air” (Satan; Ephesians 2:2). So your unconverted mind is energized by Satan, “the prince of the power of the air.”

The second thing Satan does is to blind you to the truth. Listen to II Corinthians 4:3-4.

“But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them” (II Corinthians 4:3-4).

“The god of this world” is better translated as “the god of this age.” Satan is the god of this age. Satan has blinded the minds of “them which believe not.” You may wonder why you don’t understand the Gospel of Christ. The answer is simple – the god of this age [Satan] has blinded your mind. But Christ has far greater power than Satan, or any of his demons. That’s why Christ easily cast out that demon in Capernaum. Christ said, “Come out of him” and the demon “came out of him” (Mark 1:25, 26).

If you want to be a real Christian and a disciple of Jesus, then Christ must take away Satan’s control of your thinking. One Hippie once told Dr. Hymers, “I need a brain transplant.” That was way too extreme. What that young man needed was to have his mind cleansed by Jesus. The way Jesus does that is very simple. He washes your mind with the Word of God – the Bible. The Bible speaks of “the washing of water by the word” (Ephesians 5:26). Psalm 119:130 says,

“The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple” (Psalm 119:130).

Do you want to be a disciple of Jesus? Here is a practical way to start. Read one of Dr. Hymers’ sermon manuscripts on our website every night before you go to sleep. Our website is at www.sermonsfortheworld.com. If you read one of Dr. Hymers’ sermons every night before you go to bed, the Bible verses and comments will cleanse your mind and you will soon trust Jesus and be saved! Please stand and sing hymn number 5, “I Know the Bible is True.”

I know the Bible was sent from God, The Old, as well as the New;
   Inspired and holy, the living Word, I know the Bible is true.
I know, I know, I know the Bible is true;
   Divinely inspired the whole way through, I know the Bible is true.

I know the Bible is wholly true, For peace it gave me within;
   It finds me, comforts me day by day, And gives me victory o’er sin.
I know, I know, I know the Bible is true;
   Divinely inspired the whole way through, I know the Bible is true.

Though foes deny with a spirit bold The message old, but still new,
   Its truth is sweeter each time ‘tis told, I know the Bible is true.
I know, I know, I know the Bible is true;
   Divinely inspired the whole way through, I know the Bible is true.
(“I Know the Bible is True” by Dr. B. B. McKinney, 1886-1952).
