SIN AND BLOOD

A sermon written by Dr. C. L. Cagan
and preached by Mr. John Samuel Cagan
at the Baptist Tabernacle of Los Angeles
Lord’s Day Morning, September 10, 2017

“The blood of Jesus Christ [God’s] Son cleanseth us from all sin”
(I John 1:7).

Almost everyone thinks they are going to die, but they do not know what comes after death. Everyone has thought about what comes after death. People have all kinds of ideas about what happens after death. Your college professor thinks that there is no afterlife. Your friend thinks that everyone gets reincarnated. But the Bible says there is a real Heaven and a real Hell, and Heaven and Hell are forever. The Bible does not say you will go to Heaven because you are good. You know you are not really good. Even though you’re as good as most people and you’re not as bad as someone else, you’re still not good enough to get into Heaven. The Bible says you have to be perfect to get into Heaven, and you know that you are not perfect. The Bible says, “The soul that sinneth, it shall die” (Ezekiel 18:20).

If you have any sin on your record, you will go to Hell. You’re not good enough to get to Heaven, and you never will be. The Bible says, “Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them” (Galatians 3:10). If you don’t do everything which God commands in the Bible, you will go to Hell. You can never be good enough to go to Heaven. You need to get there in another way. You need to get there by the Blood of Christ. Our text says, “The blood of Jesus Christ [God’s] Son cleanseth us from all sin” (I John 1:7). What your problem is, and how you can be saved from it, is given in two words in our text: SIN and BLOOD. I want to talk about those two words today.

I. First, the word “sin.”

“The blood of Jesus Christ [God’s] Son cleanseth us from all sin” (I John 1:7).

Everyone admits they are sinners. You admit you’re a sinner. But you think of your sin as a minor peccadillo. A “peccadillo” is a small mistake, something that everybody does. So you forget about it. But God doesn’t forget about it. God remembers every sin as an offense against His law – as a rejection of God Himself. When you despise and disobey God’s law, you despise and reject God Himself. What is your sin?

Sin is when you do things that are wrong. The Bible says, “Sin is the transgression [the breaking] of the law” (I John 3:4). Have you ever told a lie? Everyone has. And the Bible says, “Thou shalt not bear false witness” (Exodus 20:16). The Bible says, “All liars shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone” (Revelation 21:8).

You did things that nobody knows about. You don’t want anyone to know about them. You’d be ashamed. But God knows about them. The Bible says, “Thou [God] hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance” (Psalm 90:8). And “God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing” (Ecclesiastes 12:14). God knows all your secret sins. He will bring them out before everyone at the Last Judgment. And you will be cast into the lake of fire.

Have you ever looked at a sexual picture? Have you looked at pornography on the Internet? Jesus said, “Whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart” (Matthew 5:28). That’s what you did. You looked at a woman. You looked at sex on your computer. You thought about what you saw. You still remember it now. You committed adultery in your heart. The Bible says that “whoremongers...shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone” (Revelation 21:8). The Greek word translated “whoremongers” is pornois. The English word “pornography” comes from that Greek word. You looked at pornography. You are pornois. God knows all your secret sins. You will go to the lake of fire.

And sin is when you don’t do things that are right. The Bible says, “Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them” (Galatians 3:10). Someone asked Jesus, “Which is the great commandment in the law?” (Matthew 22:36). Jesus said to him,

“Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment” (Matthew 22:37-38).

You break the first and great commandment! You do not love God with all your heart, soul and mind. Before you came here you hardly went to church at all. You treated God like He wasn’t important. But there is something else you love with all your heart, soul and mind. You can’t live without it. It’s your computer, your smartphone. You spend hours every day in the electronic world – the Internet, e-mails, texting, selfies, Facebook, pornography, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, video games, Call of Duty, Clash of Clans, and a million other things. You can’t live without your gadget. You can’t get along for a day without it! You put all your heart, soul and mind into it, for hours every day. You don’t serve the real God. Your gadget is your god!

Sin is really a rejection of God. You refuse to do what God says. You do things that God forbids. Every time you sin, you say “no” to God. Ask yourself, “Why do I do this?” Your outward sins come from your sin nature inside.

Far deeper than the outward sins you do is your sin nature. It’s not what you do, it’s what you are. You are sinful in the heart of your being. You are selfish. The things you do come out of the way you are. You can’t change yourself. With effort you can change some outward things. You would like to change everything about you with the flip of a switch. But you can’t. You can’t get rid of your sin nature. You inherited it from Adam. It’s built into you. The Bible says, “The carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be” (Romans 8:7). You can’t make yourself follow God. The Bible says that you are “dead in sins” (Ephesians 2:5). You are “fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind” (Ephesians 2:3). You are “by nature the children of wrath” (Ephesians 2:3).

My father, Dr. Cagan, was that way himself. And he knew it. He thought about it many times. For years before he was converted, he knew he had rejected God. He denied the Bible and the Christian faith. When he sinned, he knew he was refusing God. When he was selfish, he knew he was rejecting God. When he decided to live his own way and not God’s way, he knew he was saying “no” to God. He had chosen evil. He had chosen to be evil. He could not save himself. Thank God, Jesus saved him – by His Blood! And that brings me to the second point.

II. Second, the word “blood.”

“The blood of Jesus Christ [God’s] Son cleanseth us from all sin” (I John 1:7).

You can’t do anything to save yourself. Luther tried it. Wesley tried it. Cain tried it. It didn’t work for any of them. But Cain’s brother Abel came by the Blood and was saved! The Bible says,

“Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering: But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect” (Genesis 4:3-5).

You’ve got to come to God by blood, or you can’t come at all. Your sin can only be cleansed by blood! That’s why Jesus came. He was born as a baby. He lived as a man. Only a man can die for the sins of other people. And Jesus never sinned. Only a man without sin can pay for the sins of others. Christ shed His Blood on the Cross to wash your sins away. Jesus knew why He came. He said to His Disciples, “The Son of man [Jesus]... came... to give his life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). Jesus showed His Disciples “that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day” (Matthew 16:21). Jesus said, “For this cause [this reason] came I unto this hour” (John 12:27). Christ knew exactly why He came – to give His life as a sin-payment for us all.

The New Testament is filled with Blood. Over and over again it says that people are saved by the Blood of Christ. The Bible says,

“Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood” (Romans 3:24-25).

Again, the Bible says,

“Being now justified by his blood” (Romans 5:9).

At the Last Supper, the night before He was crucified, Jesus took the cup and said,

“This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you” (Luke 22:20).

The Apostle Paul spoke of “the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood” (Acts 20:28). The Blood of Christ is the Blood of God, for Jesus Christ is God the Son. The Bible says, “We have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins” (Ephesians 1:7). Again, the Bible says, “We have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins” (Colossians 1:14). Hundreds of times the Bible says it – blood, blood, blood! You can only be saved by the Blood of Christ!

Your problem is sin, sin, sin! The answer is Blood, Blood, Blood! Sin – Blood! Sin – Blood! Sin – Blood! That’s all! It’s as simple as that!

You will never be saved by looking at your thoughts and feelings. The Blood of Christ isn’t there. The Blood was shed on the Cross. Now the Blood is up in Heaven, where it covers our sins. There’s no point in looking at your thoughts and feelings.

You can’t be saved by believing a doctrinal truth – even something about the Blood. You’ve got to have Jesus Himself! You’ve got to have the Blood itself applied to your sins. Just thinking about the Blood in your head doesn’t save you. That’s not where Jesus is. That’s not where the Blood is.

You need to look away from yourself to Jesus Himself. Jesus is the one with the Blood. The Blood of Christ is not in your head or your heart. The Blood of Christ is with Jesus Himself up in Heaven. Turn away from yourself and trust Jesus, not yourself. The Bible says, “Look unto me, and be ye saved” (Isaiah 45:22). Don’t look inside yourself. Look to Jesus Himself. The Bible says, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved” (Acts 16:31). Jesus is the one with the Blood. Trust Him. Don’t trust something you believe in your mind. Don’t look at your thoughts and feelings to see if you’re converted. Trust Jesus Himself. He’s the one with the Blood. If you trust Jesus, His Blood will cover your sins.

Why do I tell you to be covered by the Blood of Jesus? Because only the Blood of Jesus saves a soul. Emi Zabalaga was lost in sin. She needed a Saviour. She wrote, “My sin stretched out like a bottomless ocean. I couldn’t take it anymore. I had to have Christ. I had to have His Blood. Instead of hanging back from Jesus in cowardly fear, afraid of another false conversion or making a mistake, or looking within myself, checking my feelings or groping around in the darkness as I always did before, I looked to Christ by faith. There He was! The living Christ! He saved me; He drenched my sins in His precious Blood; He took the heavy burden of sin away! Jesus absorbed the wrath of God that should have deservingly been poured out on me in life, in death, at the Last Judgment, and in Hell. He pardoned and forgave me of all my sin. My record is stamped ‘Not Guilty’ with His own Blood! He is my advocate, my Mediator, my hero, and my Lord.” That is what the Blood of Jesus means to a soul who was lost, and is found in Christ. Only the Blood of Jesus saves a soul.

The Blood of Jesus is of the highest importance to me, even though I have not seen or felt it. Because by the Blood of Jesus I am redeemed. I was so lost. I was so lost in a miserable angry life. I had no hope for the future. And I could not change. I could not decide to be anything except for what I already was. My pride kept me lost. My stubbornness kept me hopeless. My sin kept me sinful.

I knew I needed a Saviour, but I would not admit it. I knew I needed to be forgiven, but I would not ask for forgiveness. But finally, the Holy Spirit defeated my soul and I could not go on in my sin any longer. I was confronted with the truth of my own sinful, damned, and unforgiven soul, and I was utterly lost. I was utterly lost, and in need of a Saviour. That Saviour found me – His name is Jesus. Jesus forgave me by the authority of His Blood. Nothing could hide my sins except the Blood of Jesus. I needed my sins covered, therefore I had to have the Blood of Jesus. That is what you must have as well. You must have your sins covered. You must be forgiven and cleansed and hidden by the Blood of Jesus. Trust Jesus, and His Blood will cover, cleanse, hide your sin, and you will be saved forever. I pray that you will trust Him today. Amen.
