LET’S FINISH OUR WORK!

by Dr. Kreighton L. Chan

A sermon preached at the Baptist Tabernacle of Los Angeles
Lord’s Day Morning, January 10, 2016

“My meat [food] is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work” (John 4:34).

Christ threw Himself into the work of evangelism. The passage of Scripture that Mr. Prudhomme read a few minutes ago tells us that. Jesus walked miles out of his way to speak to a woman of Samaria. He led her to salvation through trust in Him. After she trusted Christ, the woman went back to her city and told the people there about Jesus. Many of them trusted Him. What a work of evangelism!

For Jesus, winning a soul was worth going out of His way. It was more important than eating a meal. That’s why He said,

“My meat [food] is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work” (John 4:34).

Christ’s work was to do what God sent Him to do – to save souls.

Last week our pastor, Dr. Hymers, told us we need to keep doing evangelism. He said if we relax, become comfortable, and stop doing evangelism, our church will die. Yes, a group of people we call “the Thirty-Nine” saved our church building by giving money. But the church is not a building. The church is made up of people! We still have to save our church by bringing in people! To do this, we have to keep doing evangelism. If our church does not bring in people, it will die. But if we keep on bringing in people, it will live. I thought about what our pastor said. His wise words show the love for souls that Christ had. Our Saviour said to his Disciples,

“My meat [food] is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work” (John 4:34).

Christ was doing God’s work. It was the work God sent Him to do. And what was this work? The Bible says,

“God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved” (John 3:17).

God sent Jesus into the world to save souls. That was Christ’s work. He was focused on doing His work. Christ said His “meat,” or His food, was to do the will of God by saving the lost. This is what fed His soul. This is what He lived to do. Christ was busy in the work of soul winning. He never stopped doing it.

But Christ is not on earth now. He is in Heaven at the right hand of God. Who must carry on His work? You! Before Christ ascended back to Heaven, He said to His Disciples,

“As my Father hath sent me, even so send I you” (John 20:21).

God sent Christ His Son to save souls. Now Christ sends you to do the work of evangelism. Christ was focused on His work. So should we be. Eternal souls are at stake, as well as the future of our church. Christ told His Disciples to reach the lost. He said to them,

“He that receiveth whomsoever I send [you] receiveth me and he that receiveth me receiveth him [God] that sent me” (John 13:20).

This is God’s plan to reach the lost. Think of it as a chain. God sent Christ to evangelize and save souls. Now Christ sends you to do His work. You are an important link in the chain! You bring in names and phone numbers from evangelism. We call them. Many of them will come to church. They will hear the Gospel preached. Some of them will trust Christ. Through Christ they will be saved. God sent His Son to earth to save the lost. He did the work of evangelism. Now He sends us to do the work of evangelism.

I. First, the work of Christ is evangelism.

Christ said,

“My meat is to do the will of him that sent me” (John 4:34).

Christ lived to do the will of God. He lived to save lost souls. He was focused on the work of evangelism, of saving souls. But His Disciples were not. They were thinking only of food. Jesus hadn’t eaten for some time. The Disciples asked him about that. But Christ said to them,

“I have meat to eat that ye know not of…My meat is to do the will of him that sent me” (John 4:32, 34).

The Disciples were not interested in the work of evangelism. They were hungry. They wanted to fill their stomachs. But they had no hunger for saving souls. They were thinking of their own needs. Shame on them! The Apostle Paul rebuked this selfish attitude. He wrote,

“Whose God is their belly … who mind earthly things” (Philippians 3:19).

What about you? If you’re not doing evangelism, you have the wrong attitude. Let’s not live only for ourselves or our families. To do evangelism you must be concerned about lost souls. They don’t have God. They don’t have a local church with Christian friends to love them. And they are not saved. We have so much to offer them in our church. They will hear the Gospel preached. They will be with people who know Christ and want to be their friends. They will be with people who care about their souls. Oh, let’s do the work of evangelism! Let’s be hungry for it! And we must do it now. The Disciples knew that Christ had called them to evangelism. But they were lazy. They wanted to put it off. But Christ told them,

“Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest” (John 4:35).

Christ was talking about the harvest of saving lost souls. But the Disciples did not want to do evangelism. They wanted to wait. But Christ told them that the harvest time for evangelism was now, not later. What an application to our church! Yes, we will go full throttle in evangelism in the summer. That’s a great time for our church. Many young people come in during that time. But we must not wait until summer. Many will come in now, during the winter and spring. But we need to go out and get them! We just came through what the world calls the “holidays.” People were with their families. The schools were closed. It was harder to do evangelism. So we rested for a few weeks. But the holidays are over. Young people are back in school. Now is not the time to rest. This is the time to work! This is the time to do evangelism!

Think of the Samaritan woman. She met Jesus. She trusted Him. Then she did evangelism herself. The Bible says,

“The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men, Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?” (John 4:28-29).

She couldn’t hold back. She was excited about Christ and shared with others what Christ meant to her! Listen to the results,

“And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did” (John 4:39).

She did the work of evangelism. Her “work” wasn’t hard. She went to her city. She spoke to the men there. That took some effort. She had to make the time. But it wasn’t hard at all.

Do you appreciate what Christ has done for you? You might not be converted yet. But are you thankful for our church, for the people that love you and care for you? You feel it’s your home. You love to be here. There are people here that you like to be with. Be excited and thankful for how God has blessed you. Then tell other people about it! Invite your classmates and friends and relatives to our church party! Go to the college campuses to get names on evangelism. Bring in their names and phone numbers. The Bible says,

“Andrew…first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ. And he brought him to Jesus” (John 1:40-42).

Like the Samaritan woman, Andrew brought his brother to Jesus. Andrew wasn’t even converted yet. If you’re not converted, be obedient to Christ in evangelism. It will help you to think of your own need for Christ. And soon you may be converted.

All of you can think of someone you can bring to church. Go do it! Don’t wait! This is another way to do evangelism. Bring in as many names as you can. But if you bring a friend from school or work, that’s even better. They’re more likely to come into our church. You can do this whether you’re lost or saved. Some of you have already done it. That’s great! Keep it up. And others of you, do the same!

And that’s the way to save our church! If we all do evangelism, our church will live! It takes a little work to get names. It takes a little time. But it’s not hard. We can bring in people. We can save our church. Our church will live! Amen!

II. Second, the work of our church is evangelism.

Our text says,

“My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work” (John 4:34).

Christ did the work of winning souls while He was on earth. Now He sends us out to do the same work. Before He went to Heaven, Christ gave all of us the Great Commission,

“Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15).

Jesus said,

“Go ye therefore, and [make disciples of] all nations” (Matthew 28:19).

Christ sent us out to win souls just as His Father had sent Him. He said,

“As my Father hath sent me, even so send I you” (John 20:21).

Christ sends us out to finish the work of evangelism that He began. His work becomes our work. Let’s finish our work! We are not done. There are countless people on the college campuses that have never heard a clear Gospel message of salvation. Let’s finish Christ’s work by bringing them into our church to hear what Christ has done for them.

And it starts by bringing in names. Bring in a name when you come in on Thursday. Bring in another name when you come in on Saturday. Many of you can bring in more than one name. The Bible says,

“Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might” (Ecclesiastes 9:10).

Do evangelism with all your might! Bring in as many names as you can. And don’t stop!

Christ ascended back to Heaven nearly two thousand years ago. Ever since, faithful Christians have been evangelizing the lost. That is how Christianity has lived. If the early Christians did not do evangelism, Christianity would have died with them. But they did evangelism, and Christianity did not die. Yes, Christianity is weak here in the West. But it is strong in China, in Africa, and other parts of the Third World. There is life there because the Christians do the work of evangelism.

Our pastor has taught us that we live in a time of great apostasy. The love of so-called Christians in America has grown cold. But at the same time the Gospel is spreading through China, Iran, and parts of Africa. Don’t be like the Americans! Let us love God, love Christ, and love lost souls. Go out to evangelism and bring young people into our church. Let us finish the work that Christ sent us to do.

Christ is calling you to finish His work of evangelism. This is a great responsibility. But it is also a privilege to serve Christ. Let us not fail Him. Let us finish the job! When will our work of evangelism be done? We’ll be done when Christ comes back for us. Then He will say,

“Well done, thou good and faithful servant … enter thou into the joy of thy lord” (Matthew 25:21).

Let’s get the vision of our pastor for lost souls! Let’s get the vision of Christ Himself! Let us do the work of Christ in evangelism and never quit. Then our church will live and thrive! Evangelism is Christ’s work. And evangelism is our work. Let’s do it until Christ returns! Amen and Amen!
