BLOOD FOR BLOOD – AMERICA
IN THE HANDS OF AN ANGRY GOD!
(GIVEN ON SANCTITY OF HUMAN LIFE SUNDAY)

by Dr. R. L. Hymers, Jr.

A sermon preached at the Baptist Tabernacle of Los Angeles
Lord's Day Morning, January 17, 2010

“For blood it defileth the land: and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it” (Numbers 35:33).

Six cities in the land of Israel were designated as cities of refuge. Dr. McGee said,

A man who had unwittingly killed a person could flee to the city of refuge. This would save him from mob action…This gave time for a fair trial later…Notice, however, that the protection of the cities of refuge did not apply for the willful murderer (J. Vernon McGee, Th.D., Thru the Bible, Thomas Nelson Publishers, 1981, volume I, p. 531; note on Numbers 35:30-33).

To this Dr. John Gill added,

The shedding of innocent blood defiles a nation, and the inhabitants of it, bringing guilt thereon; and subjects [it] to punishment: “and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it” or “there can be no expiation,” or “atonement made” for it in any other way; the blood of the murderer is required at his hands, and nothing short of it will satisfy law and justice, see Genesis 9:6 [“whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed”] (John Gill, D.D., An Exposition of the Old Testament, The Baptist Standard Bearer, 1989 reprint, volume I, p. 870; note on Numbers 35:33).

“For blood it defileth the land: and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it” (Numbers 35:33).

Dr. D. James Kennedy told us that “Theodore Roosevelt said Lincoln mastered only one book and that was the Bible. He had committed thousands of verses to memory – many whole chapters” (D. James Kennedy, Ph.D., What They Believed, Coral Ridge Ministries, 2003, p. 55). I am convinced that Lincoln had Numbers 35:33 in mind when, in his Second Inaugural Address, Lincoln said that the Civil War would continue “until every drop of blood drawn with the lash shall be paid by another drawn with the sword.” Lincoln believed that the law of “blood for blood” was being enacted. We live in a less religious age, and it sounds strange to many.

Every drop of blood…shall be paid by another drawn with the sword.

But the Bible says,

“Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed”
       (Genesis 9:6).

“For blood it defileth the land: and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it” (Numbers 35:33).

That was exactly what Lincoln believed. As Dr. Gill put it, “The shedding of innocent blood defiles a nation, and the inhabitants of it, bringing guilt thereon; and subjects [it] to punishment…the blood of the murderer is required at his hands, and nothing short of it will satisfy law and justice” (ibid.).

51 million American children have died under the abortionist’s knife since Roe v. Wade “legalized” the slaughter of these innocents in 1973. It does not take a mathematical genius to see how vast this carnage is compared to the deaths in all the wars America has fought.

TOTAL:

653,708

Thus, the total number of “battle deaths,” in all of America’s wars combined, is estimated to be 653,708 (America’s Wars: U.S. Casualties – Infoplease.com). Less than 1 million have died in all our wars! Yet 51 million have been killed by abortion! THINK OF IT! FIFTY MILLION MORE DIED FROM ABORTION THAN ALL THE SOLDIERS WHO HAVE DIED TO KEEP OUR NATION FREE!

We recoil in horror at the 3,000 who were murdered by those terrorists at the World Trade Center on 9/11 – and rightly so! But what of the 51 million boys and girls who were boiled to death in salt water, had their heads and arms torn off – as they screamed for mercy in their mothers’ wombs? Yes, the ultrasounds clearly show them screaming! Pulpit Helps said,

We look with horror at the pictures of the Jews who were sacrificed by Hitler…We even have a museum in Washington, D.C. dedicated to those who died. The holocaust which has taken place in America since abortion was legalized in 1973 makes Hitler’s plan pale by comparison. Since 1973 there have been [51] million abortions (Leland Crawford, “Abortion: America’s Holocaust,” Pulpit Helps, January, 1999, p . 23).

The following incident made a heartbreaking imprint on my soul. A pro-life worker came to our church. He opened a little box and put into my hands the 8½ pound body of a beautiful African-American baby girl. She had been poisoned to death by an abortionist in the womb of her mother.

Though I have told this many times, tears fill my eyes once again as I write this at 2:00 AM four days before “Right to Life Sunday,” 2010. The first Allies entering the Nazi death camps in 1945, seeing the mountainous heaps of dead Jews who had been slaughtered in Hitler’s ovens by poison gas, must have remembered it forever – as I will always, to the end of my life, feel the horror of holding that little Black girl’s body in my hands!

As I wrote this, I received a letter from a priest asking me to send money for yet another lawsuit to help stop abortion. I threw it in the trash can in my office! THIRTY-SIX YEARS OF LAWSUITS HAVEN’T SAVED A SINGLE BABY! NOT ONE!

The President speaks of “War on Terrorism”! What greater terrorism is there than that of the American Holocaust? Where is war on the terrorism that takes place in the womb? Clergymen from Jerry Falwell to the priest who sent me that letter today have used the blood of our children to raise MONEY! They are “selling” these babies – like Judas sold Christ – for a few silver coins! DO NOT SEND THEM ANOTHER DOLLAR! NOT EVEN A QUARTER! They have had their chance – and they have failed! They could have stopped the slaughter long ago – but they collected MONEY instead! If Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Don Wildmon or some other leading evangelical preachers (or Roman Catholic prelates) had been willing to risk spending a few nights in jail – like Dr. Martin Luther King, Dr. William Sloane Coffin, and Father Richard John Neuhaus did to stop segregation – the abortion holocaust would have ended long ago!

Where was Billy Graham during the slaughter of the innocents? Where was Billy Graham? Washing his hands like Pilate, he excused himself by saying, “I’m not an Old Testament prophet.” Good God! What a vacuous excuse! Wasn’t he an American? Any decent American in his position should have acted! Simply being an American should have energized him to move with the courage of Dr. King, to stop babies like the little Black girl I held in my hands, from being poisoned or cut to pieces in the womb! Human decency alone should have moved Graham to stop this carnage! WHERE WAS BILLY GRAHAM DURING THE AMERICAN HOLOCAUST? The Irish poet William Butler Yeats said it all in his poem “The Second Coming:”

The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
   (“The Second Coming” by William Butler Yeats).

Judge of the nations, spare us yet,
Lest we forget – lest we forget!
   (“Recessional” by Rudyard Kipling).

In 1984, while he was still in office, President Reagan said,

We cannot survive as a free nation when some men decide that others are not fit to live and should be abandoned to abortion or infanticide (President Ronald Reagan, Abortion and the Conscience of the Nation, Thomas Nelson Publishers, 1984, page 38).

“We cannot survive as a free nation.” President Reagan said it, and he was right.

“For blood it defileth the land: and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it” (Numbers 35:33).

We cannot survive as a free nation when some men decide that others are not fit to live and should be abandoned to abortion… (President Reagan).

The shedding of innocent blood defiles a nation, and the inhabitants of it, bringing guilt thereon; and subjects [it] to punishment (Dr. John Gill).

Leonard Ravenhill said, “The greatest single threat to America today is GOD” (Leonard Ravenhill, America is Too Young to Die, Bethany Fellowship, 1979, p. 52). The most well-known sermon ever preached in America was Jonathan Edwards’ “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.” It ends with these words,

Now undoubtedly it is, as it was in the days of John the Baptist, the ax is in an extraordinary manner laid at the root of the trees, that every tree that brings not forth good fruit, may be hewn down, and cast into the fire.  Therefore let everyone that is out of Christ, now awake and fly from the wrath to come. The wrath of almighty God is now undoubtedly hanging over [a] great part of this congregation: let everyone fly out of Sodom. Haste and escape for your lives, look not behind you, escape to the mountain, lest you be consumed. (Text from the Jonathan Edwards Center at Yale University.  Click here to read the whole sermon.)

“The land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it” (Numbers 35:33).

Sing hymn number 1 on your song sheet – slowly and thoughtfully!

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord;
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword;
His truth is marching on!
Glory! glory, hallelujah!  Glory! glory, hallelujah!
Glory! glory, hallelujah!  His truth is marching on!

He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment seat;
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet!
Our God is marching on!
Glory! glory, hallelujah!  Glory! glory, hallelujah!
Glory! glory, hallelujah!  Our God is marching on!
    (“The Battle Hymn of the Republic”
              by Julia Ward Howe, 1819-1910).

I regret that I led an imprecatory prayer to God to remove Supreme Court Justice William Brennan in 1986.  I wish I had not done that, and I would never do it again.  I believe that Christian leaders should stand up for the right to life, but imprecatory prayers might fan the flames of violence, and are not in accord with the teachings of Jesus (Luke 9:54-56).

Yet, it does seem that judgment is falling on America. A Chinese official recently said, “There isn’t enough money in the world to finance America’s debt.” America seems to be falling into ruin before our very eyes! Soon there may be no place to hide from the fiery wrath of God, “for the land is full of bloody crimes, and the city is full of violence” (Ezekiel 7:23).

Flee to Christ! Leave the sin of this blood-cursed nation behind thee and flee to Christ! Be cleansed from thy sin by His blood! Only the Blood of the Son of God can atone for thy sin and save thee from the Day of Judgment!  May some soul here this morning cry out to Jesus,

I am coming, Lord!
   Coming now to Thee!
Wash me, cleanse me in the blood
   That flowed on Calvary.
(“I Am Coming, Lord” by Lewis Hartsough, 1828-1919).

Sing it!  It's number 7 on your song sheet!

I hear Thy welcome voice,
    That calls me, Lord, to Thee
For cleansing in Thy precious blood
    That flowed on Calvary.
I am coming, Lord!
   Coming now to Thee!
Wash me, cleanse me in the blood
   That flowed on Calvary.
