Hundreds of others watch the videos on YouTube, but they soon leave YouTube and come to our website. YouTube feeds people to our website. The sermon manuscripts are given in 46 languages to about 120,000 computers each month. The sermon manuscripts are not copyrighted, so preachers can use them without our permission. WHY CHRIST CAME
(LORD’S SUPPER #3)

by Dr. R. L. Hymers, Jr.

A sermon preached on Lord’s Day Evening, March 25, 2007
during the observance of the Lord’s Supper
at the Baptist Tabernacle of Los Angeles

“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”
(I Timothy 1:15).

We will not truly understand Christ Jesus unless we understand those words, “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” The entire life and purpose of Jesus was to save sinners. How can we read the four Gospels without seeing that fact? Indeed, how can we read any of the New Testament without noticing it?

Christ came into the world because men were lost. He came to save them. They were guilty, and He came to save them by bearing their guilt on the Cross. He came to cleanse sinners by His precious Blood. He came to give them the new birth so they would be fit to enter Heaven, as saved souls, for ever.

But the most wonderful fact is that He came to save sinners - not the self-righteous, but the ungodly. He came to heal those with sin-sick souls. He came to save the lost.

“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”
      (I Timothy 1:15).

Are you a lost sinner? Then He came to save you! What did He do to save you? Why, He died in your place, to pay for your sins in the sight of God! He shed His Blood to wash away your sins and make you clean! He was buried in a tomb to take away your sins for ever! He rose physically from the dead to give you eternal life! If you are a sinner, Christ did those things to save you from the guilt and penalty of sin!

“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”
      (I Timothy 1:15).

We have heard the joyful sound:
   Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Spread the tidings all around:
   Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Bear the news to every land,
   Climb the steeps and cross the waves;
Onward - ‘tis our Lord’s command;
   Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
(“Jesus Saves” by Priscilla J. Owens, 1829-1907).

And that’s what the Lord’s Supper tells us. It is a perfect picture of our text,

“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”
      (I Timothy 1:15).

Taking the Lord’s Supper does not save you. Oh, no! It is a picture of what Jesus did to save you. The bread is a symbol that pictures His Body, broken on the Cross to pay for your sin. The cup is a symbol that pictures His Blood, shed on the Cross to cleanse you from sin.

No one is saved by taking the bread and the cup. All who take it must first be saved by taking Jesus, by believing on Him, by resting on Him alone, by being saved from sin by Him, for

“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”
      (I Timothy 1:15).
