I HATE HALLOWEEN

by Dr. R. L. Hymers, Jr.

A sermon preached at the Baptist Tabernacle of Los Angeles
Lord's Day Morning, October 20, 2002

“He observed times, and used enchantments, and used witchcraft, and dealt with a familiar spirit, and with wizards: he wrought much evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger” (II Chronicles 33:6).

The Los Angeles Times said that Halloween has grown enormously in the last few decades:

Once considered a children’s holiday, it has grown in recent years to encompass adults as well. It has become our bacchanal, a largely secular celebration in which the national id is allowed to run rampant (Los Angeles Times, October 23, 2001, p. A-1).

The Times was exactly right when it said that Halloween has changed from a children’s holiday to an adult bacchanal. When I was a little boy, back in the 1940s, no adult ever participated in Halloween activities. Neither did teenagers! It was only for very small children. The last time I participated in Halloween activities I was twelve years old, and I got teased for it by my older cousins. As a result, I never did it again. Halloween was only for little kids.

But in the late 1970s the old Hippies began to make Halloween an adult event. Now that the Hippies control our culture, Halloween has become what the Times called our national “bacchanal.” Bacchanal was a good word for the Times to use in describing Halloween. The modern, Hippie version of Halloween is indeed a bacchanal. The word “bacchanal” means “an orgy,” “a debauched saturnalia,” “a carousal,” “a drunken, licentious revelry” (ref. Richard Soule, The Penguin Dictionary of English Synonyms, London: Bloomsbury Books, 1991).

I don’t blame you young people. Your generation did not make Halloween what it now is. It was the old Hippies, your parents’ generation, who made Halloween a drunken, wild, debauched orgy. The Hippies are to blame – the Ozzie Osbourne, Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon crowd. They’re almost as bad even after they become Christians. The women still don’t pluck their eyebrows or comb their stringy hair and fix it. They still have hair growing out of their noses and food sticking between their straggly teeth. They still think they are right on every point – at all times. This is the crowd of old Hippie Neanderthals who gave you “the age of Aquarius” and the modern bacchanal of Halloween – when they turn the entire United States of America into New Orleans at Mardi Gras – and swim through an ocean of their own vomit to worship Dracula and Frankenstein!

I hate everything the old Hippies do – from the old Hippie Bill Clinton to the old Hippie Rosie O’Donnell. I hate their way of life – and I hate their Halloween! I hate Halloween! Tell somebody I said it! I hate Halloween!

And you young people need to escape from the Halloween of the old Hippies! Their Halloween is like quicksand. If you get caught in the quicksand of Halloween, you will be sucked under, and drowned. I hate Halloween! Escape for thy life! Look not behind thee! Escape from the quicksand of Halloween, lest thou be consumed! Escape for thy life! (ref. Genesis 19:17).

Notice what God thinks of the practices of Halloween. King Manasseh did many of the things associated with Halloween, and the Bible says:

“He observed times [practiced astrology], and used enchantments [magic], and used witchcraft, and dealt with a familiar spirit [a demon], and with wizards: he wrought much evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger” (II Chronicles 33:6).

Just as it was in the days of Manasseh, God still hates the practices of Halloween. They still “provoke him to anger” (II Chronicles 33:6). God’s Word says, “I hate every false way” (Psalm 119:104). God hates Halloween and so do I. The Bible says, “Hate the evil, and love the good” (Amos 5:15). Here are four of the reasons I hate Halloween.

I. First, I hate Halloween because it glorifies death.

The two greatest horror films of all time are Dracula, starring Bela Lugosi as the vampire, and Frankenstein, starring Boris Karloff as the monster. Dracula was a dead man, who supposedly rose from his coffin to drink human blood. Frankenstein’s monster was sewed together from pieces of corpses. Karloff’s monster was a dead man, brought back to life by a mad scientist. These two movies are the greatest Halloween classics of all time. And both films glorify the dead. They are movies about dead people. This is not only unnatural and weird – it’s also wrong! Why wrong? Because death is the enemy of mankind! The Bible says:

“The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death” (I Corinthians 15:26).

Death should not be glorified, honored, or magnified because it is mankind’s greatest enemy!

Sensible people hate death and everything associated with it. Only an abnormal, demonically motivated generation would honor and exalt death – as the old Hippies have done at Halloween.

It isn’t good for you to see a horrible movie like Red Dragon, which is playing in theatres all across the nation. You do not need to see Anthony Hopkins eat someone’s brains from a hole in their skull. It’s not good for you to watch a cannibal eat human flesh. Take a look at Anthony Hopkins’ eyes! Take a good look! Demon-possessed!!! Don’t put him in your brain! You could become demon-possessed yourself! If you have any brains at all you will avoid putting puke like this into your head! Don’t see The Ring either, unless you want to possibly become demon-possessed. The newspaper says, “The Ring will haunt you.” You bet! That’s why I’m not seeing it! I don’t want to be haunted by demons! The newspaper said, “The Ring will disturb your dreams for weeks to come.” It probably will! Can you imagine a generation so dumb that they’ll pay eight bucks to have their dreams disturbed “for weeks to come”? Hard to believe anyone would be dumb enough to pay money to have their dreams disturbed! Don’t you be that stupid! Don’t pay some degenerate Hollywood types to warp your brain any worse than it already is! You don’t need to see Anthony Hopkins eat a human brain! It’s bad for you – psychologically and spiritually. It won’t make you feel good. It won’t make you happy. It will only depress you and harm you.

II. Second, I hate Halloween because it honors Satan and demons.

The Bible says, “I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils [i.e. demons]” (I Corinthians 10:20). It is harmful for you to have fellowship with demons! Why? Because Satan and his demons want to destroy you! The Bible says that God sent demons, called “evil angels,” as a judgment against sin:

“He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels among them” (Psalm 78:49).

The Devil and his demons are out to trick you and destroy you. Demons can cause mental disorders. They can lead you into sin. They can lead you into false doctrine. They can gain control of your mind and heart. Demons and Satan can pluck the preaching of God’s Word out of your heart and keep you from getting saved. Jesus said:

“Then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved” (Luke 8:12).

Halloween does not honor or praise God. It exalts the Devil and demons. How many brains do you need to figure that out? Just look around at Halloween and you will see people dressed like demons, ghouls, witches, and Satan himself! Nowhere is the Bible quoted! Nowhere is God honored – by those celebrating this Satanic holiday!

Dr. D. A. Waite correctly says:

Halloween, as we know it, originated in Europe…The truth is, it was brought over from the Satanic Druid culture of the Celts.

The Druids were Satanic to the core in their worship and pagan practices. Halloween is a Druid holiday that we in America have received from Satanic paganism.

It is my conviction that true Bible loving Christians should not be a part of the evils and wickedness of Satanic things. We must realize that Halloween is the Devil’s birthday. On that day, Halloween, October 31st, the witches and Satan worshippers make a human sacrifice by slaying a child. We seek to enlighten people about the Satanic origins and practices of Halloween (D. A. Waite, Th.D., Ph.D., Halloween – the Devil’s Birthday, The Bible For Today, n.d.).

The Bible says:

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (I Peter 5:8).

III. Thirdly, I hate Halloween because it is helping to destroy America.

You heard me right! Halloween is one of the things that is destroying our nation! If you love America, you should turn completely away from Halloween! Have done with it! Away with it! We need GOD! We need God’s help in this time of war and terrorism! Down with Halloween! GOD BLESS AMERICA! As Irving Berlin put it,

God bless America, land that I love;
Stand beside her, and guide her,
Through the night with the light from above!
From the mountains, to the prairies,
To the ocean, white with foam,
God bless America, my home sweet home,
God bless America, my home, sweet home.
(“God Bless America” by Irving Berlin, 1939).

We don’t need Halloween! We need God – to bless America this morning!

Of King Manasseh, it is said,

“He observed times, and used enchantments, and used witchcraft, and dealt with a familiar spirit, and with wizards: he wrought much evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger” (II Chronicles 33:6).

“And the Lord spake to Manasseh, and to his people: but they would not hearken” (II Chronicles 33:10).

“Wherefore the Lord brought upon them the captains of the host of the king of Assyria, which took Manasseh among the thorns, and bound him with fetters, and carried him to Babylon” (II Chronicles 33:11).

We are at war with those same people today! Can we expect God to deliver us from Saddam Hussein and other Muslim terrorists if we worship Halloween instead of Christ? I don’t think so! Get out of Halloween – and get into church! Come fully to Jesus Christ! Get converted! Be in church every time the door is open! Become a real Christian! Why be lonely? Come home – to church! Do it! Do it! Do it! Be here again with us on Thursday – Halloween night! Be here on Sunday morning and evening. You need Christian fellowship! Do it!

IV. Fourthly, I hate Halloween because young people
don’t need it. They need God!

One woman said, “My children need Halloween.” That woman was wrong! How is Halloween going to help her children – or anyone else? It just isn’t true! You don’t need Halloween! You need Christ. You need the Bible. You need to be in church – to cure your loneliness – so you can hear the sermons and get saved by coming to Jesus Christ. But you do not need Halloween! That woman was dead wrong!

Kids are lonely today. College-age young people are looking for stable friends. They are looking for meaning and direction in their lives. You can’t find those things by taking a drug, like Ecstasy, and going to a rave, or a dance club, or a Halloween orgy. You won’t find a permanent cure for loneliness there! You won’t find real friends there! You won’t find anything worthwhile to believe in there! You find those things in a Bible-believing, gospel preaching church – and nowhere else!

Manasseh was taken into captivity because of his sins, which were basically the sins of Halloween. They bound him with chains and put him in prison in Babylon. But then the Bible says:

“And when he was in affliction, he besought the Lord his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers, And prayed unto him: and he was intreated of him, and heard his supplication, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the Lord he was God” (II Chronicles 33:12-13).

Manasseh turned away from his sins and turned fully to God. And God blessed him and saved him, and restored him. What a wonderful ending to Manasseh’s life! He was converted at last!

That’s what I want you to do. I am asking you to come to Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Christ died on the Cross to pay for your sins. Christ rose physically from the dead. He ascended back into Heaven, where He is now seated on the right hand of God. Come to Christ! Be washed from your sins in His Blood! Come to Christ now – and He will save you!

I hear Thy welcome voice, That calls me, Lord, to Thee
For cleansing in Thy precious Blood That flowed on Calvary.
I am coming, Lord! Coming now to Thee!
Wash me, cleanse me in the Blood That flowed on Calvary.
(“I Am Coming, Lord” by Louis Hartsough, 1828-1919).
