"Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God" (II Thessalonians 2:3-4).
He will make a treaty with the Jews in his own name (John 5:43), which will bring them into possession of the temple area where they can renew their long discontinued worship (Revelation 11:1-3). (Ibid., p. 128).
Scripture passages, including II Thessalonians 2:4 and Revelation 13:14-18, indicate that an image will be erected by the coming Antichrist, and that refusal to worship this idol will trigger a period of dreadful persecution, primarily for the Jews, but for all the other inhabiters of the earth as well (Richard DeHaan, Israel and the Nations in Prophecy, Zondervan Publishing House, 1968, p. 89).
"For this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: that they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness" (II Thessalonians 2:11-12).
"And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon (Satan); and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels (i.e. demons) were cast out with him" (Revelation 12:7-9).
"Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time" (Revelation 12:12).
"And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world" (Revelation 13:6-8).
During World War I, one time I did guard duty over some criminally insane in a hospital. One poor, troubled, demented man would put his thumbs in his eyes and try to pull them out, and we frantically pulled his hands away. He would pull out his hair by handfuls until his head was perfectly bald. At the midnight hour I sat near his cot with an Enfield rifle, on guard duty. He whispered to me, "Leave your gun there for just a little bit and go out in the hall. Go for a drink of water. I promise I won't hurt anybody else but myself. Oh, give me a chance to kill myself!" He pleaded with me (to) shoot him, he was in such torment (Dr. John R. Rice, Behold, He Cometh, Sword of the Lord, 1977, page 171).
That's the way people will be during this time because of such intense activity by Satan and the demons.
Third, God will pour out seven "bowls" of wrath and judgment on the world.
"And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.
The first vial.
And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image.
The second vial.
And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea.
The third vial.
And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood. And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus. For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy. And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.
The fourth vial.
And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire. And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.
The fifth vial.
And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain, And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.
The sixth vial.
And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.
(Parenthetical, vs. 13-16.)
And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame. And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.
The seventh vial.
And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done. And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great. And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great." (Revelation 16:1-21)
"For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth ("hindereth," Scofield) will let ("hinder," Scofield), until he be taken out of the way"
(II Thessalonians 2:7).
It must be God’s power in operation that holds back Satan, so that the man of sin, the son of destruction, won’t be able to come until God permits it by removing his restraining power (MacArthur Study Bible, note on II Thessalonians 2:6).
"And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie" (II Thessalonians 2:11).
Those who take the mark of the beast thereby commit the unpardonable sin and doom themselves forever in Hell…in the Great Tribulation, yet future, men will cross the deadline, will commit the unpardonable sin (Crossing the Deadline, Sword of the Lord, 1953, pp. 16, 11).
The unpardonable sin is such a sin as any man or woman might commit after great enlightenment, after many calls (to salvation) are refused, after many pleadings of the Holy Spirit are mocked and resisted and insulted (Ibid., p. 17). The sinner (committing the unpardonable sin) becomes hardened, set against God, against salvation, and so will never repent (Ibid., p. 24). God’s Spirit does not call the forsaken sinner (Ibid., p. 25). The man who has set his heart against God forever and has insulted and driven away the Holy Spirit will never come for the cleansing which is offered (Ibid.). So one who has driven away the Spirit of God and has passed the boundaries of mercy cannot repent (Ibid.).
"…because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth"
(II Thessalonians 2:10-12).
You have waited so flippantly, refused Him so
lightly,
You have sinned long and dreadfully, your heart is so wrong;
Oh if God grows impatient, the sweet Spirit offended,
If no longer He calls you, doom is yours when He’s gone.
Then how sad facing judgment you’ll recall with no
mercy,
That you tarried and lingered till the Spirit was gone;
What reproaches and mourning if when death finds you hopeless,
You have tarried and lingered and have waited too long!
