AMERICA – DEFILED AND POLLUTED
(with photographs)

by Dr. R. L. Hymers, Jr.

A sermon preached at the Fundamentalist Baptist Tabernacle of Los Angeles
Lord’s Day Evening, December 3, 2000

Please stand with me for the "Pledge of Allegiance." Ready. Begin.

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of
America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation,
under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Please remain standing as Mr. Griffith sings "The Battle Hymn of the Republic."
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord;
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword;
His truth is marching on.
Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah! His truth is marching on.
He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never sound retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment seat.
O be swift, my soul, to answer Him! Be jubilant, my feet!
Our God is marching on.
Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah! Our God is marching on.
Please remain standing and turn with me in your Bible to Numbers 35:33.
"So ye shall not pollute the land wherein ye are: for blood it defileth the land: and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it" (Numbers 35:33).
You may be seated. Commenting on Numbers 35:25-34, the evangelical Bible teacher Charles Ryrie writes:
These verses list criteria for judging various types of cases. If a verdict was manslaughter, the slayer could live as long as he stayed within a city of refuge until the death of the high priest; after that, he could safely return home (v. 28). More than one witness to a murder was required (v. 30). No ransom was permitted so that the life of a murderer could be spared (v. 31) or so that one guilty of manslaughter could return home (v. 32), because killing polluted the land (v. 33). (Ryrie Study Bible, note on Numbers 35:25-34)
"So ye shall not pollute the land wherein ye are: for blood it defileth the land: and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it" (Numbers 35:33).

Although these rules were given to ancient Israel by God, we believe that there is a principle here that applies to all nations, particularly America. With our godly heritage dating back to the Pilgrim fathers of our nation, America's foundation lay in the Bible and in good Protestant Christian beliefs.

There are two reasons that this verse applies to America:

    1. FIRST, BECAUSE SIN IS A REPROACH (I.E. DISGRACE) TO ANY PEOPLE.

"Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people" (Proverbs 14:34).

This verse plainly shows that the same sins that brought God's judgment on ancient Israel will also cause God to judge "any people" (Proverbs 14:34).

    1. SECONDLY, THERE IS A LAW OF SOWING AND REAPING, FOUND THROUGHOUT THE BIBLE, AND EXPRESSED IN THESE SUCCINCT WORDS:
"Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap" (Galatians 6:7).
Since sin is a reproach to any people, and since whatever is sown will be reaped, the text applies to America just as much as it did to ancient Israel:
"So ye shall not pollute the land wherein ye are: for blood it defileth the land: and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it" (Numbers 35:33).
This text puts America in a fearful position. We have killed forty-two million babies by abortion and we are not going to get away with it.
Nazi Germany had judgment at Nuremberg. America will also have a day of great judgment – for murdering 6 1/2 times as many as Hitler gassed in his ovens. If Hitler could not escape the wrath of God, neither can America.
During World War II Dr. John R. Rice wrote:
God does send the heathen armies against the people who know about Him but go on in sin!…Six times in the book of Judges we are told how God raised up heathen, wicked nations and kings against His own people Israel because of their sins. God does punish nations for their sins! God is using Japan to punish America for our sins (John R. Rice, "America Gets Back Her Scrap Iron," in When Skeletons Come Out of Their Closets, Sword of the Lord, 1943, p. 49).
Why did America get caught in the horror of World War II? Dr. Rice said it was because of our national sins. I believe that our treatment of American Indians and Blacks caused God to punish us as a nation in this great war and also in Viet Nam.
There can be no excuse for what our nation did to the Indians. The U. S. Army under Andrew Jackson ripped the Choctaw Indians out of Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia and pushed them into Oklahoma. The Cherokee Indians were removed from North Carolina and herded into Oklahoma also. This event is called "the trail of tears." It occurred in the dead of winter and thousands died. It was America’s version of the Bataan Death March.
The lynching of Black Americans has been an ugly, forgotten secret in our nation’s past. I am reading an article in the Pentecostal Charisma magazine as I work on this sermon. The article is titled "The History America Chose to Forget." The article is illustrated with photograph after photograph of these hangings. I am including four of the photos with this sermon.

In the first photograph, more than 10,000 Americans gathered for the lynching of Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith on August 7, 1930, in Marion, Indiana. The last photograph (below) is that of Rubin Stacey, who was hanged July 19, 1935 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was accused of "frightening a white woman by asking her for food." "The blacks were (often) forced to hold out their hands while one finger at a time was chopped off. The fingers were distributed as souvenirs" (Charisma, November, 2000, p. 66).

Charisma reports:

Characteristic of lynchings were the ritualistic-style executions unlike any form of brutality in American history… It’s proof that lynchings were a form of human sacrifice – a practice common to occult worship today. Victims were often burned alive as they were hanged from bridges, trees or light poles. Children would sift through the remains in search of collectibles. Photos of the scenes were commonly taken, then made into postcards and sold for a profit (Ibid., p. 68).

The "crimes" that these people were accused of were rarely committed, such as "rape, murder, and being rude to white people" (Ibid.). I wish everyone hearing this sermon could get that copy of Charisma and see photo after photo after photo of these brutal lynchings of Black Americans.

Two of the most dreadful ones have not been reproduced here. One shows a man named Jesse Washington hanging from a lamp post in Waco, Texas. His body has been burned beyond recognition. His arms and legs extend in a ghastly fashion brought on by burning and rigor mortis. The other photo shows the body of William Brown burning on a heap of sticks, in Omaha, Nebraska. It is a grisly photograph, so horrible that I did not reproduce it in this sermon. What makes the picture repugnant beyond imagination are the smiling faces of the men surrounding William Brown’s burning body. Many of these men (perhaps seventy-five of them) would tell you they were Christians – Baptists, Pentecostals, Church of Christ – despicable!
Notice the face of the man in the first photograph, who is pointing up at the body of Abram Smith in Marion, Indiana in 1930. Was he a Baptist? A Methodist? A Presbyterian? Did he call himself a Christian and then take the law into his own hands and help hang Abram Smith without a trial? Did the two women so clearly photographed on his left, who stood by and did nothing while this man was murdered, call themselves Christians? They almost certainly did in Marion, Indiana in 1930. Look at the man in the straw hat on the right side of the second photograph. Look at the young girl in front of him with a plainly photographed smile on her face as she looks at the dead body of Rubin Stacey, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Did this girl go to Sunday School? Was the man in the straw hat a church member? Probably. Shame! Disgusting, filthy, godless shame on such heathen people, who doubtlessly called themselves "Christians" in this life, but have now gone to face the terror of Almighty God!
The NAACP reports nearly 5,000 documented lynchings like these between 1882 and 1968, and the "numbers of unreported cases were much higher" (Charisma, p. 66). Approximately 10,000 Black Americans were hanged, drawn and quartered, or burned alive – without a trial – by Americans in those years.
I am no "bleeding heart liberal." I do not like Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton. I think they are charlatans who make money off of racial problems. But how can any Christian condone what was done to the American Indians or the Black people of our nation?
Furthermore, I believe that Dr. Rice was correct when he said,
God does send heathen armies against the people who know about Him but go on in sin.

I think Dr. Rice was right when he said that our boys were sent to die in World War II because of God’s judgment on our nation.

And I believe that the Viet Nam War was a judgment on America for sin. We couldn’t get away with sending the Indians on a death march! We couldn’t get away with lynching 10,000 Blacks! There is a God in Heaven! God punished America! He allowed thousands of our soldier boys to be killed in battle because of our sins as a nation!
Six times in the book of Judges we are told how God raised up heathen, wicked nations and kings against His own people Israel because of their sins. God does punish nations for their sins! (John R. Rice, "America Gets Back Her Scrap Iron," Sword of the Lord, 1943).
Now, will America get away with the slaughter of forty-two million babies? Will God close His eyes and overlook this sin?
Dr. John R. Rice wrote:
Nazi Germany enacted a law permitting the elimination of "useless" members of society, people who were seen to be of no value to society…Now we have the same pattern coming in America in which a whole category of humans, unborn babies who cannot yet speak for themselves, are to be slaughtered… The people who are strongest for abortion are not good people and they are not good citizens of America (John R. Rice, Abortion: The Murder of the Helpless Unborn, Sword of the Lord, 1971, pp. 37-40).

These vile neo-nazis will bring the wrath and judgment of God down on our nation.

"For blood it defileth the land: and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it" (Numbers 35:33).
I am not advocating violence of any kind. No real Christian should harm an abortionist. Two wrongs don’t make a right. I am simply saying that God Himself will now judge our nation with unforeseen disasters. You can count on it!

    1. God destroyed the nation of Judah for idolatry and the shedding of innocent blood:

"Moreover Manasseh shed innocent blood very much, till he had filled Jerusalem from one end to another" (II Kings 21:16).

When Nebuchadnezzar came and took the nation captive, the Bible says:

"Surely at the commandment of the Lord came this upon Judah, to remove them out of his sight, for the sins of Manasseh, according to all that he did; And also for the innocent blood that he shed: for he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood; which the Lord would not pardon (II Kings 24:3-4).

Notice that the Lord would "not pardon" the nation for shedding "innocent blood" even though they had a great revival! (II Kings 23:1-27). After the revival under Josiah, God said He would still destroy the nation for idolatry and shedding innocent blood under Manasseh (II Kings 23:26-27). It was too late even for a national revival to save them! I believe that America is now probably in this state. Even a national revival cannot save us from the wrath of God over the abortion holocaust.

    2. God gave them into the hands of a foreign nation for shedding the blood of their sons and daughters:
"Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils, And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and daughters…and the land was polluted with blood… Therefore was the wrath of the Lord kindled against his people, insomuch that he abhorred his own inheritance. And he gave them into the hand of the heathen; and they that hated them ruled over them. Their enemies also oppressed them, and they were brought into subjection under their hand"(Psalm 106:37-42).

Thousands now pour across our borders. I have proved in an earlier sermon that abortion has created a job vacuum that has sucked these people across our borders to take the jobs our own Black and White American children would have held in former days. (See "The Self-Extermination of the American People" 9/24/00, on this website). Don’t blame the Hispanics! It isn’t their fault! It’s ours. We killed forty-two million kids. Don’t blame them for coming to fill their shoes in the workplace! And what about the People’s Republic of China? Will they rule America in the future? Will God put us under their yoke for drenching our land in "innocent blood"? You answer that one for yourself as you read your daily newspaper in the months and years ahead.

"Son of man, they that inhabit those wastes of the land of Israel speak, saying, Abraham was one, and he inherited the land: but we are many; the land is given  us for inheritance. Wherefore say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; Ye eat with blood, and lift up your eyes toward your idols, and shed blood: and shall ye possess the land?… Ye defile every one his neighbour’s wife: and shall ye possess the land? Say thou thus unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; As I live, surely…I will lay the land most desolate, and the pomp of her strength shall cease…Then shall they know that I am the Lord, when I have laid the land most desolate because of all their abominations which they have committed" (Ezekiel 33:24-29).
    3. God would not hear the prayer of such a people:

"Then said the Lord unto me, Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my mind could not be toward this people: cast them out of my sight, and let them go forth…And I will appoint over them four kinds, saith the Lord: the sword to slay, and the dogs to tear, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the earth, to devour and destroy. And I will cause them to be removed into all kingdoms of the earth, because of Manasseh the son of Hezekiah king of Judah, for that which he did in Jerusalem" (Jeremiah 15:1-4).

Remember what he did in Jerusalem – he shed innocent blood, "for he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood" (II Kings 24:4). Even the prayers of Moses and Samuel, if they had been alive, could not save the nation from the wrath of God. Is it too late to pray for America? You be the judge, in the light of these Scriptures.

"We have transgressed and have rebelled: thou hast not pardoned. Thou hast covered with anger, and persecuted us: thou hast slain, thou hast not pitied. Thou hast covered thyself with a cloud, that our prayer should not pass through…Fear and a snare is come upon us, desolation and destruction. Mine eye runneth down with rivers of water for the destruction of (America! Oh! my beloved America!). Mine eye trickleth down, and ceaseth not, without any intermission (America! Oh! my beloved America!)"  (Lamentations 3:42-49).
And now, my dear young friend, you live in a nation on the edge of being destroyed by God. What should you do? Hide. Hide from the wrath, from the blast of fire, from a righteous God. Hide! If you are not hidden when God’s fire comes, it will destroy you:
"For our God is a consuming fire" (Hebrews 12:29).

You must hide in Jesus, the Son of God. Only by hiding in Jesus can you escape the fiery wrath of God against sin:

"Being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him" (Romans 5:9).
And come, hide with us in church – in the house of God – until the storm of God’s anger passes over and we are safe in a better world, in the Kingdom of God. Hide with us in the church from the storms and tempests of wrath.
"One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in his temple. For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me…" (Psalm 27:4-5).

O, come and hide from God’s anger. Hide under the Blood of Jesus. Hide with us in the church, in God’s house. Be with us every Sunday.
