AND YOU YOURSELVES THRUST OUT

A sermon written by Dr. R. L. Hymers, Jr.
and preached by Mr. John Samuel Cagan
at the Baptist Tabernacle of Los Angeles
Lord’s Day Morning, October 22, 2017

“And you yourselves thrust out” (Luke 13:28).

Jesus was travelling through the cities and villages on His journey toward Jerusalem. Great crowds gathered to hear Him preach and ask Him questions. A man stepped forward and said, “Lord, are there few that be saved?” Jesus did not answer the man directly. He turned to the crowd and answered the question.

Jesus told them that a struggle to enter into salvation is necessary. He said that many would have some interest in salvation but would not be saved. They would not be saved because they were not willing to strive and so they would remain lost. He told them that the time when they could be saved would pass. He told them that there would come a time when then they would have committed the unpardonable sin. He then spoke of people in Hell crying and screaming. They could see the patriarchs in Heaven, but they themselves would be in Hell. Finally, Jesus tells them that people from all nations and tongues will be saved. People from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south would be saved by Jesus. People from all races will come down and “sit down in the kingdom of God” (Luke 13:29).

The words that Jesus spoke must have “blown their minds.” They had never heard such a thing! The rabbis had always told them that they alone were the people of God. But Jesus told them that most of them would be lost. Jesus told them they would be lost and people from distant countries would take their place in the kingdom of God.

“And you yourselves thrust out” (Luke 13:28).

He said that they would cry and scream when they saw the patriarchs in Heaven

“And you yourselves thrust out” (Luke 13:28).

There is in this text a warning – a terrible warning. Others will be saved

“And you yourselves thrust out” (Luke 13:28).

If your eyes were open you would realize that these words describe the most awful sentence and awesome warning given in Scripture:

“And you yourselves thrust out” (Luke 13:28).

I will now apply this warning in four ways.

I. First, it contains a warning for “church kids.”

Who are the “Israelites” among us tonight? Who are the counterparts of those to whom Jesus spoke that day? When He spoke He said:

“And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God” (Luke 13:29).

“They” will come and get saved. But then He said:

“And you yourselves thrust out” (Luke 13:28).

Who are those spoken of as “they” and who are those spoken of as “you”? “They shall come.” “You yourselves shall be thrust out.” The application should be obvious. “They shall come” speaks to the new people. “You yourselves thrust out” speaks to the church kids.

This is a sad and startling truth of Scripture. “They shall come” and “you yourselves thrust out.” The Israelites neglected Jesus, and were thrust out. Because of your neglect of Christ, you will also be bypassed. You will be pushed to the side and new kids will come in and take your place. Is this surprising to you? It shouldn’t be. You’ve been around long enough to see it happen many times. “They come” and “you are shut out.” Haven’t you seen that happen many times? Church people leave and new people come and take their place. Haven’t you seen that happen? A church member leaves. A new person comes and gets saved. You’ve seen it again and again.

And why should it be any different with you? You have grown up in the church. Now you are an old-timer. When you get the opportunity, in a few months or a few years, you will leave too – and new people who came and got saved will replace you in the church. “They shall come” – “and you yourselves will [be] thrust out.”

This is a terrible warning to church kids,

“And you yourselves thrust out” (Luke 13:28).

II. But, second, the text contains a warning against
familiarity to new people.

“And you yourselves thrust out” (Luke 13:28).

Even if you were not born in the church, you can be thrust out as well.

What was it about these people that Jesus spoke to that disqualified them from being saved? They had gotten so used to their religion that it became second nature to them. They heard the Bible read and the sermons preached Sabbath after Sabbath. They got used to it. It was the same old thing week after week. Nothing that they heard could make an impression on them. It was the “the same old same old.” Isn’t that what Jesus was saying to these people? The Bible says,

“Then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets. But he [Christ] shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity” (Luke 13:26-27).

You can get so used to hearing the preaching that it has no more effect on you than it had on them. They would say, “We have eaten with you. We have heard you preach in our streets.” But He would say, “Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity.”

Even if you were once a new person, this can quickly happen to you! You can quickly become used to the preaching and the warnings. Soon the preaching will not make any impression on you. Soon you will be as cold and lifeless and hopeless as any cynical church kid! When that happens you will be as hopelessly lost and hardened as they are!

I warn you – don’t hesitate! Don’t wait to “learn more.” The more you learn, the harder your heart will become. You can quickly learn to be like the lost “church kids” – and when you become like them, you will be as hopelessly hardened against true conversion as they are!

If you become like the lost “church kids,” God will send others into the church to take your place and be saved:

“And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God” (Luke 13:29).

“And you yourselves thrust out” (Luke 13:28).

III. Then, thirdly, the text gives every unconverted sinner
a warning against heart-hardening.

Every one of you is warned by the text:

“And you yourselves thrust out” (Luke 13:28).

Whoever you are, there is a warning for you in the text,

“And you yourselves thrust out” (Luke 13:28).

The Holy Spirit will not always be present as He is now. He will not always be here to warm your heart, and prick your conscience, and show you your need for Jesus Christ.

“And the Lord said, My Spirit shall not always strive with man” (Genesis 6:3).

If you feel that you are a sinner, I warn you, it will not always be so. If you feel that your heart and mind are wicked, you will not always feel this way. If you feel that you deserve to be punished by a Holy God, that feeling will soon leave you. I warn you! The Holy Spirit will not always strive with you as He is doing now!

And when the Holy Spirit is gone, you will be as helpless as Samson when his hair was cut by a wicked woman. “And he wist not that the Lord was departed from him” (Judges 16:20). He thought he could “go out as at other times” (ibid.). But the Holy Spirit was gone from him! He was utterly helpless when the enemy came in and bound him with chains, and put out his eyes “and he did grind in the prison house” (Judges 16:21).

When the Spirit of God leaves you, you will be bound in chains by demons. Your spiritual eyes will be gouged out of their sockets forever by demonic fiends. And Satan will drag you in his chains to grind in his prison house for the rest of your life.

Are you concerned? Do you care about what is happening to your soul? Are you afraid? God help you – I hope you are! The Bible says,

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge” (Proverbs 1:7).

“Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil” (Proverbs 3:7).

The Psalmist said of God:

“Thou, even thou, art to be feared: and who may stand in thy sight when once thou art angry?” (Psalm 76:7).

Do not be given over to chains in the Devil’s “prison house” with Samson! Fear God; and come to Christ for salvation from God’s wrath! Only the Blood and righteousness of Christ, imputed to you by faith in Christ, can save you from the punishment of an angry God.

“And you yourselves thrust out” (Luke 13:28).

IV. But, fourthly, we come back to the text one more time,
and find in it a warning about reprobation.

“And you yourselves thrust out” (Luke 13:28).

You will not only be thrust out when you die. While you are alive, you will be thrust out of God’s grace. God will give up on you. You will be turned over to reprobation. Once you are thrust out into reprobation it will be impossible for you to be saved. The Bible says,

“God gave them over to a reprobate mind” (Romans 1:28).

When God gives you over to reprobation, you can never be saved even if you want to. You will be like Esau. He rejected God’s grace. Then God gave up on him. He was given up to reprobation and could never be saved. The Bible says,

“He found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears” (Hebrews 12:17).

Esau wanted to find God. But he couldn’t. It was too late!

You will be like Pharaoh who rejected the preaching of Moses. The Bible says, “He sinned yet more, and hardened his heart” (Exodus 9:34). Then there came a time when “the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart” (Exodus 10:20, 27; 11:10). God gave up on Pharaoh. God hardened Pharaoh’s heart. God gave Pharaoh up to reprobation. God turned away from Pharaoh and never spoke to him again. Pharaoh was never saved. He couldn’t be. And that’s what will happen to you!

The text says, “And you yourselves thrust out” (Luke 13:28). You will be thrust out of God’s grace. You will be thrust out of all possibility of being converted. You rejected Christ. You rejected the Gospel. And now you cannot be saved!

Notice that the text says,

“And you yourselves thrust out” (Luke 13:28).

The word “thrust” is from the Greek word “ekballo.” Strong’s Concordance tells us it means “to eject,” “to expel,” “to send away.” You will be thrown out of God’s grace. God will turn away from you. He will never speak to you again as He did before. God will deal with you only in judgment. God will say, “You rejected me. Now I reject you.”

You will see people who came to church only a few times trust Christ and be saved, “and you yourselves thrust out.” Do not reject salvation through the Blood of Christ! Do not wait and put off coming to Jesus so He can wash your sins away in His Blood. But it will be too late for you then.

“And you yourselves thrust out” (Luke 13:28).

If you are lost, come and be saved before you become hardened like those who cannot be saved! Come to Jesus Christ, the Son of God. He is alive, at the right hand of God the Father in Heaven. Come to Jesus and be washed clean from your sins by His eternal Blood! Come to Jesus! Come to Him now! Throw yourself on Jesus, the Lamb of God that taketh away the sins of the world! Don’t wait! Come now and be washed clean before your heart becomes harder, and your will is fixed in nature’s night against the Lamb of God! Come, before it is said of you,

“And you yourselves thrust out” (Luke 13:28).

Trust Jesus before it is too late. Dr. Hymers, please come and close this service.
