GOD’S RIGHTEOUSNESS AND OUR REWARDS

by Dr. Kreighton L. Chan

A sermon preached at the Baptist Tabernacle of Los Angeles
Saturday Evening, October 15, 2011

“God is not unrighteous to forget your work” (Hebrews 6:10).

Please stand and turn in your Bible to Hebrews 6:10. That is found on page 1295 in the Scofield Study Bible. Paul wrote these words of encouragement to us,

“For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister” (Hebrews 6:10).

My text is found in the beginning of verse 10.

“God is not unrighteous to forget your work” (Hebrews 6:10).

Close your Bible and be seated. Two points naturally come from the text. First, God is righteous. And second, God does not forget your work.

I. First, the text tells us God is not unrighteous.

The Apostle Paul refers to the righteousness of God to encourage us to continue in our work. God’s righteousness is spoken of all through the Bible.

“He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he” (Deuteronomy 32:4).

Abraham used the righteousness of God when he asked God to spare Sodom. Abraham said,

“Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?”
       (Genesis 18:25).

To connect the righteousness of God and recognition of our work brings us great comfort. We should never doubt that God will reward us for the work we do for Him! Knowing that God is righteous encourages us as we work for Him. He will reward us because He always does what is right!

“God is not unrighteous to forget your work” (Hebrews 6:10).

II. Second, the text tells us that God will not forget your work.

Living the Christian life is not always easy. In fact, many times it is very hard. The Devil will use many difficulties to try to discourage you. The Devil tells you that you are wasting your life for nothing. But remember, life is even harder for those who are lost. The Bible says,

“The way of transgressors is hard” (Proverbs 13:15).

Sinners are judged for their sins even in this life, and more so in the life to come. The lost “enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season,” but they grow tired even of this. Sinners find that the pleasures of life do not bring lasting happiness to them. They have no real hope, and they are without God in this world. The prophet Isaiah said,

“There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked”
       (Isaiah 57:21).

But to the faithful Christian we have the promise that,

“God is not unrighteous to forget your work” (Hebrews 6:10).

God’s righteousness not only makes certain that He will “not forget” your work, but He will remember and reward you for it! The righteousness of God demands that judgment be exact. And so, when God says He will not forget your work He really will not forget! Everything that is done worthy of reward will be accounted for. God says through the Apostle Paul,

“The labourer is worthy of his reward” (I Timothy 5:18).

That is God’s Word. He will reward our labor done in obedience to Him. You have God’s promise on that! He will reward you according to His righteousness.

What an encouragement that is when we are tempted to think that our work goes unnoticed and when little fruit seems to come of it. Every time you are faithful in evangelism, God sees it and will remember it. Every time you are faithful in extra evangelism, God sees it and will remember it. Every time you go out on personal evangelism, God sees it and will remember it. Every time you try your best to bring in prospects, your family, or your friends, God sees it and will remember it. Every time you pray for the lost, God hears and will remember it. Every time you pray and ask God to make you a channel of blessing, God hears your prayer and remembers it. Every time you sacrificially use your gas money to drive visitors, God sees it, and remembers it. Every time a visitor comes into our church through your help, God sees it and remembers it. Every time you compel a visitor to come back Sunday night and Saturday night, God sees it, and will remember your good work. God sees all that you do and all your work, and He will reward you for it.

God will reward you well. God will remember all the work that you do. And He rewards us much more than what we deserve.

Jesus gave a parable of a man traveling into a far-away country. He had delivered goods to his servant to be invested while he was away. This speaks of Jesus returning to Heaven and of Christians serving Him until He returns. Jesus said to His faithful servant,

“Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord” (Matthew 25:21)

This servant had faithfully worked over a few things, yet Jesus rewarded him to be ruler over many things. This shows that God remembers your work, and He will reward you more than you deserve.

We receive rewards, yet, it is not through our own strength that we work. The Apostle Paul said,

“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me”
       (Philippians 4:13).

Through God’s grace, He provided Jesus to be our substitutionary sacrifice in atoning for our sins. Through grace He has drawn us to His Son in conversion. Through grace He gives us the strength to serve Him. And through grace He rewards us for our work. It is all of grace!

“God is not unrighteous to forget your work” (Hebrews 6:10).

God will reward you now, in this life. We do not need to wait until we get to Heaven to receive rewards. We have many rewards now in this life. God told Abraham,

“I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward”
       (Genesis 15:1).

To know God and have peace with Him through Christ is a great reward. To be able to obey God satisfies the soul. To be able to love God with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength will thrill your heart.

And Jesus said,

“I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly” (John 10:10).

Christ gives us the abundant life. To live, to please, and to serve Him brings happiness to the soul. Oh, to have great joy in serving Christ and then to be rewarded at the same time! Oh, what a double blessing! Truly this is a “labor of love.”

There is no greater reward than having close communion with our Saviour. This pursuit of Christ was the main focus and consolation for the Apostle Paul.

“I press toward the mark for the prize for the high calling of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:14).

Jesus Himself is our greatest reward. Don’t miss out on this blessing. Be encouraged in the work. Continue to bring souls in. Continue to pray for them and love them. Continue to press them to come back Sunday evening and Saturday evening.

Don’t be distracted from our labor of love. “Seek ye first the kingdom of God.” Bring in prospects, family, and friends. And God will reward you for your work.

“God is not unrighteous to forget your work” (Hebrews 6:10).

God will reward you in the future. The rewards we receive now are a good enough reason to continue working hard for God in the church. But God in His grace will give us more rewards in Christ’s coming Kingdom. The Apostle Paul said,

“But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him” (I Corinthians 2:9).

We know some of the things that God has prepared for us. We will live in a great mansion in Heaven. Later we will reign with Christ in His Kingdom. We must remind ourselves of God’s great goodness toward us. We must remind ourselves of the rewards that He will give us. It will spur us on in serving Him in our church. We must remind ourselves that we are just passing through this wicked world. Our citizenship is in Heaven. Our future is in Christ’s Kingdom!

God in His righteousness will remember and tally every good work you do for Him. He will reward you greatly. Oh, let us continue on in the work of soul winning. Let nothing discourage us. Not sinners. Not the Devil. Not circumstance. Nothing!

Hear the words of Christ,

“And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give to every man according as his work shall be”
       (Revelation 22:12).

Amen and Amen.
