THE ENEMIES OF FREEDOM -
A PATRIOTIC SERMON

"Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people" (Proverbs 14:34).


President Reagan once said,

Freedom is a fragile thing and it is never more than one generation from extinction. It is not ours by inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people. Those who have known freedom, and then lost it, have never known it again (Ronald Reagan, Quotable Reagan, edited by Steve Eubanks, 2001, p. 25).

I believe that Reagan was right - freedom must be fought for and defended constantly. But to make practical sense of President Reagan's statement, we must know who the enemies are, and we must know what to do to defeat them.

I. First, the enemies of freedom.

At the top of this list I would place secular humanism. This movement is secular - it is against Christianity. This movement is humanistic - it places man at the center instead of God. Its philosophy is openly and vigorously promoted by the ACLU, the National Organization for Women, and the secular, state-run institutions of learning, from the first grade through college.

Government-run schools and colleges promote secularist dogmas that, on a daily basis, undermine belief in God, the Bible and Jesus Christ. The goal of the secularist humanists is to undermine and attack Christianity at every level of the state-run school system. Secular humanism is the greatest enemy of freedom in America. Every Christian attending a state-run school should be aware that he is on enemy ground, and act accordingly.

The second enemy of freedom is abortion on demand. The pro-abortion movement flies in the face of the opening words of the Declaration of Independence,

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

The Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution says,

Nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property…nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

President Reagan said,

Abraham Lincoln recognized that we could not survive as a free land when some men could decide that others were not fit to be free and should therefore be slaves. Likewise, we cannot survive as a free nation when some men decide that others are not fit to live and should be abandoned to abortion…there is no cause more important for preserving that freedom than affirming the transcendent right to life of all human beings, the right without which no other rights have any meaning (President Ronald Reagan, Abortion and the Conscience of the Nation, Thomas Nelson Publishers, 1984, p. 38).

Was President Reagan right when he said that "there is no cause more important" than stopping abortion on demand? You bet he was! We have killed off over 45 million American children since abortion was legalized thirty-one years ago. Those American children - 45 million of them - are not here. The results of this holocaust will be devastating to our way of life within the next twenty years. Those 45 million kids won't be here to pay Social Security, or to vote, or to be in the military. We will be a nation of aging hippies 20 years from now - with so few young people that there won't be enough of them to prop up our way of life! Twenty years from now, we will have killed off about 100 million American children. One third of the number of people now living in America will be gone!

The third enemy of freedom is militant Islam. The militant Muslims are not going to stop having children. The militant Muslims aren't going to have wholesale abortion. By their sheer growth in numbers, they will overwhelm the elderly Americans who did nothing while 100 million children were aborted in our land.

The militant Muslims aren't going to go away. Dan Rather, the CBS newsman, was interviewed by Larry King a couple of weeks ago. I finally heard Dan Rather say something I agree with! He said that we can expect the struggle with militant Islam to go on for two or three generations, just as the struggle with Communism went on for three generations. He is correct on that. But will there be enough American young people to continue this struggle? Not unless something drastic happens - and American women start having babies - instead of killing them! If that doesn't happen soon we may be overrun as a nation by Muslim extremists in the next quarter of a century.

The fourth enemy of freedom is "decisionism." Beginning with the ministry of Charles G. Finney and his followers, and those who agreed with his methods, the old Protestant and Baptist view of conversion was changed into a mere "decision" for Christ. Our churches have been flooded with tens of thousands, even millions, of unconverted people as a result of "decisionism." The apostasy of the Methodists, Congregationalists, Presbyterians and Baptists is directly linked to the practices of "decisionism" in our churches. America cannot remain free when the vast majority of our church members remain unconverted.

The enemies of freedom are secular humanism, abortion on demand, militant Islam, and decisionism. I say that without apology or further explanation.

II. Second, the way to overcome these enemies of freedom.

To overcome secular humanism we must pull our children out of the secular education system and either home school them or send them to a Christian school. I realize that this is not possible for everyone. Therefore pastors need to teach and preach constantly on the subject of Christian apologetics - the proofs of Christianity. Pastors should read books on apologetics and teach and preach on this subject often. Books by men like John R. Rice, Josh McDowell, Lee Strobel, and Norman Geisler are filled with ideas that should be taught and preached throughout the land in our churches, defending the Christian faith against secular humanism.

Abortion on demand should be constantly condemned in our pulpits. Every preacher should mention the subject at least once or twice a month. Every pastor should preach a whole sermon against abortion every January, on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

If America expects to win the struggle for freedom against militant Islam, pastors must do two things: (1) They must tell their people to reproduce themselves! Nothing is more important than the family - and Christian families should be large families; (2) Pastors must tell their people to support those in government who understand the ongoing threat of militant Islam - and who do something to stop it.

Furthermore, Christian homes must become local-church oriented. The security of our nation's freedom depends on the strength of the local church. The local church is our chief defense against all enemies of freedom. Join a local, New Testament church, and attend it every time the door is open. And go to the same church every week. Don't run from one church to the other. "Church hopping" is ruinous to the welfare of the soul and the freedom of our nation!

And, finally, "decisionism" must be overthrown. Dr. A. W. Tozer said,

      The tragedy is that present-day evangelism accepts the degenerate form of Christianity now current as the very religion of the Apostles and busies itself with making converts to it with no questions asked.
     We must have a new reformation. There must come a violent break with that irresponsible, amusement-mad, paganized pseudo-religion which passes today for the faith of Christ and which is being spread all over the world (A. W. Tozer, We Travel an Appointed Way, Christian Publications, 1988 reprint, p. 113).

Dr. Monroe Parker, one of the best known preachers of the twentieth century, said,

If we could get half the church members saved, we would see a great revival. In fact, I think if we could get half of the preachers in America converted, we would see a mighty revival (Monroe Parker, Through Sunshine and Shadows, Sword of the Lord, 1987, pp. 61-62).

May God grant that it be so! May God send a fourth great awakening to our churches and to our nation! And, may God bless America!
