WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT TIME AND SPACE

SCIENCE AND THE BIBLE #2

by Dr. R. L. Hymers, Jr.

A sermon preached on Saturday Evening, May 1, 2004
at the Fundamentalist Baptist Tabernacle of Los Angeles

Last week I showed you what the Bible says about the earth. The earth is suspended in space.

"He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing" (Job 26:7).

The earth is round, a sphere.

"It is he [God] that sitteth upon the circle [sphere] of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers…"
    (Isaiah 40:22).

The earth is decaying, in accordance with the second law of thermodynamics.

"Lift up your eyes to the heavens and look upon the earth beneath: for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax [grow] old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner…" (Isaiah 51:6).

So, the Bible teaches that we live on a round earth, which is suspended in space, and time is running out for our world (cf. II Peter 3:10). This is exactly what science also teaches about the earth. There is no conflict whatever between the scientific and Biblical views on these matters.

This is not understood by the average person today. Many people will tell you, "Science has disproved the Bible." You will often hear that sort of thing from a secular college professor. And the students in the classroom will usually agree with him - without examining the evidence - without studying what the Bible actually says on these subjects.

The tendency for people in our culture to discredit the Bible is rooted in the theory of evolution, which Charles Darwin introduced in 1860. Darwin's idea of macroevolution, the transmutation of one species to another, became fashionable largely as a result of H. L. Mencken's coverage of the Scopes Trial in 1925. Mencken portrayed William Jennings Bryan, the defender of the Bible, as a fool, and Clarence Darrow, the defender of macroevolution, as a brilliant exponent of scientific truth. What has been forgotten is the fact that Darrow waved a newspaper with a drawing of "Nebraska Man" on its cover, as "evidence" for macroevolution. A few months after the trial, it was discovered that "Nebraska Man" was a hoax. The so-called "scientific evidence" for the existence of "Nebraska Man" was based on the tooth of a prehistoric pig! But that hoax has been forgotten, and the myth of science disproving the Bible has been accepted by the average person in our culture.

Yet, the battle for the Bible is not over. Many scientists today are questioning Darwin's idea of macroevolution - one species mutating into another.

Albert Einstein's theory of relativity was introduced, which has led many mathematicians and scientists to refute evolution with pure mathematical probability. Although many of these modern scientists are not yet Christians, they are increasingly in agreement with Einstein that the existence of a Creator is mathematically probable.

Ralph O. Muncaster pointed out that

Scientific evidence of God is now increasing extremely rapidly - and gradually the scientific world is becoming aware of the many new breakthroughs (Ralph O. Muncaster, Science: Was the Bible Ahead of Its Time? Harvest House, 2000,   page 18).

Now, tonight I will show you two more ways that modern science and the Bible are in agreement. I will show you two ways that modern physics and the Bible agree.

I. First, time, space and matter had a beginning.

Sir Isaac Newton discovered the laws of motion and gravity. But Newton was also a defender of the Bible. He wrote against the Bible critics of his time. Two hundred years later Einstein's writings on relativity proved beyond reasonable doubt that Newton was right, and that the Biblical description of the creation of time, space and matter is probable.

Please turn in your Bible to Matthew 24:21. Here Christ speaks of the world being created.

"For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time…" (Matthew 24:21).

Thus, Christ taught that the world had a beginning. Now turn to Matthew 19:4. Here Jesus affirmed that the creation had a beginning. He said,

"Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female" (Matthew 19:4).

Not only did Christ say that man had a beginning, but He also affirmed the accuracy of the Book of Genesis. When He said, "Have ye not read?" He was citing Genesis 1:27, and Genesis 2:23-24. The Scofield center note says, "The passage is significant as Jesus' confirmation of the Genesis narrative of creation" (The Scofield Study Bible, center note "k" on Matthew 19:4).

Please turn in your Bible to Genesis 1:1. Let us stand and read this verse aloud together.

"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth"
    (Genesis 1:1).

You may be seated.

Jesus Christ confirmed that Genesis is correct. Genesis 1:1 tells us that "God created the heaven and the earth." This verse shows that time, space and matter had a beginning.

Dr. Norman Geisler says,

According to Einstein's theory of general relativity, the universe is finite [limited] and expanding in all directions. Beginning in 1919 and through the rest of this century, general relativity has been empirically verified by numerous experiments in operation science (Norman Geisler, Ph.D., and Peter Bocchino, Unshakable Foundations, Bethany House, 2001, p. 98).

Dr. Geisler gives the evidences for Einstein's theory, and then says, "Therefore…we conclude that the universe had a beginning…" (ibid., p. 101).

Ralph O. Muncaster says,

The Bible has many places where it mentions the beginning of time  and  space  (for  example,  2  Timothy  1:9;  Titus  1:2;   1 Corinthians 2:7). Tragically, it will be many more years before libraries and textbooks catch up with the recent discoveries (ibid., p. 37).

In 1992, major discoveries added strong support to the idea of a "beginning" of the universe…This has had a major impact on the body of scientists who are aware of the implications. Such prominent scientists as Stephen Hawking, Carlos Frenk, and Michael Turner have considered these discoveries possible (or even likely) evidence of a Creator (ibid., p. 37).

II. Second, time, space and matter will have an end.

The second law of thermodynamics assures us that time, space and matter will have an end. Dr. Geisler says,

We can think of the universe as a large hourglass that is running out of usable energy… In other words, the universe is running out of time, and at some time in the future our cosmic heat engine will come to a grinding and frigid halt (ibid., p. 93).

Thus, science tells us that the expansion of the universe will one day lead to the end of time, space, and matter. Just as there was a beginning, there will also be an end.

The Bible also teaches that the world as we know it will end. Please turn to Matthew 13:39-40. Let us stand and read these two verses aloud.

"The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world" (Matthew 13:39-40).

You may be seated.

Christ told us that this age would have an end. Modern science tells us that there will be an end. The only difference is that science tells us that the universe will end by freezing from the loss of energy, whereas the Bible tells us that it will end in a fiery explosion. The poet Robert Frost said,

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire…
("Fire and Ice," Robert Frost's Poems,
        Washington Square Press, 1971, p. 242).

Strangely, Robert Frost was right. The universe will end in fire. Please turn to II Peter 3:12. Let us stand and read this verse aloud.

"Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat" (II Peter 3:12).

You may be seated.

The universe is rushing toward judgment. That's why it's so important for you to come to Christ and be converted. That's why you need to live the Christian life. And may God help you to do so. Amen.
