THE LAND POLLUTED WITH BLOOD -

GIVEN ON SANCTITY OF LIFE SUNDAY, 2003

by Dr. R. L. Hymers, Jr.

A sermon preached at the Baptist Tabernacle of Los Angeles
Lord's Day Morning, January 19, 2003

"Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils, And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan: and the land was polluted with blood…Therefore was the wrath of the Lord kindled against his people…And he gave them into the hand of the heathen" (Psalm 106:37-41).

The "devils" spoken of in verse 37 were the false gods of the heathen people named Baalim and Moloch. Ellicott points out that "Human sacrifice, and especially that of children, was a Canaanite [heathen] practice…having made review of the sinful past, the [Psalmist] briefly but impressively describes the punishment which once and again had fallen on the nation" [in their captivity, under Babylon], (Charles John Ellicott, Ellicott's Commentary on the Whole Bible, Zondervan, n.d., volume IV, pp. 345-346).

The "devils" to whom our children are sacrificed are not now named Baalim or Moloch. They now have names like "choice" and a "woman's right." But they are as truly "devils" today as they were in the time of our Hebrew forefathers. And the sacrifice of our children to these false, demonic deities will bring the same wrath, and the same judgment, to our nation that it brought to ancient Israel.

"And the land was polluted with blood…Therefore was the wrath of the Lord against his people…And he gave them into the hand of the heathen: and they that hated them ruled over them" (Psalm 106:38, 40-41).

This is a sermon, not an essay, or even a speech. And so I will speak to you on this subject in the manner of a sermon, given this morning on Sanctity of Human Life Sunday, January 19, 2003, the thirtieth anniversary of the Supreme Court decision which Justice White called an act of "raw judicial power," and which has no basis whatever in our Constitution.

I. First, President Reagan wrote a book against abortion
while he was in office.

President Ronald Reagan is the only sitting President who ever wrote a book while in the White House. Time magazine said that "an essay by a recent sitting president is rare." What is even more rare is that President Reagan allowed his essay to be published as a book, with two chapters appended to it, by the Surgeon General, Dr. C. Everett Koop and the famed British author and essayist Malcolm Muggeridge. The President's book is titled Abortion and the Conscience of a Nation. It is the only book ever written by a President while he was still in office.

Editor J. P. McFadden said,

After the Nazi Holocaust, it was charged that those who knew what was happening (great men among them) failed to halt the slaughter. No one who reads this book can fail to know that the abortion holocaust is happening. Nothing is inevitable; men choose, and we Americans can choose to halt the slaughter of our own innocents. If we do not, history will record - this book is proof of it - that the guilt is ours, that we were not failed by our great men, that our own president called upon us to make the choice (J. P. McFadden, in Abortion and the Conscience of the Nation, by Ronald Reagan, Thomas Nelson, 1984, p. 13).

And what did the President say in this landmark book? I will give you several quotations from Reagan, which illustrate the heart of his message:

President Reagan said:

Our nation-wide policy of abortion-on-demand through all nine months of pregnancy was neither voted for by our people nor enacted by our legislators - not a single state had such unrestricted abortion before the Supreme Court decreed it to be national policy in 1973. But the consequences of this judicial decision are now obvious: since 1973, more than [42] million unborn children have had their lives snuffed out by legalized abortions. That is [nearly thirty] times the number of Americans lost in all of our nation's wars (ibid., p. 15).

Reagan was exactly right. Even in 1983, when the number was smaller - 15 million had died - the number of deaths from abortion was still greater than the number of deaths from all wars our nation has ever engaged in - put together! The Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, Viet Nam, the Gulf War - put the number of dead from those wars together, and today you have thirty times as many dead from abortion!

Can I drill that into you? Thirty times as many people have died from abortion - 30 times as many - as have died from all the wars of our history combined! Reagan noticed this - and so should you!

Then, in his book, the President went on to say:

Make no mistake, abortion-on-demand is not a right granted by the Constitution. No serious scholar, including one disposed to agree with the Court's result, has argued that the framers of the Constitution intended to create such a right…Professor John Hart Ely, now Dean of Stanford Law School, wrote that the opinion [to legalize abortion in 1973] "is not constitutional law and gives almost no sense of an obligation to try to be." Nowhere do the plain words of the Constitution even hint at a "right" so sweeping as to permit abortion up to the time the child is ready to be born. Yet that is what the Court ruled.

Yes, President Reagan spoke out clearly against abortion. And he was right, because the Bible says, "Thou shalt not kill" (Exodus 20:13).

II. Second, the people did not stop the killing.

The anti-war demonstrators are back on the streets, attacking President George W. Bush. The left-wing media splashes photos on the front page of the newspapers and features them as the "top story" on the evening news. These "anti-war" people are mostly Hippies, baby-boomers from about 36 to 56 years old. The Hippies were incensed over Viet Nam, a war started and escalated by President Lyndon B. Johnson. The Hippies were outraged over Johnson's war. They burned the American flag, they rioted, they laid down in the freeways and stopped the traffic, they literally burned the city of Chicago during the 1968 Democratic National Convention. They said they were interested in saving human lives by stopping the Viet Nam War.

But let's compare Viet Nam with the Abortion Holocaust. 58,000 Americans were killed in Viet Nam; far too many, yet only one-tenth of one percent of the 42 million slaughtered by abortion. Let's make it real simple. If you stood ten men in a row who symbolized the 42 million, the hand of one of those men would represent those who died in Viet Nam. In Viet Nam, one of the ten men lost one of his hands. In the Abortion Holocaust all ten men lost their lives entirely. But where were the Hippie protestors? They were quick to burn down Chicago when their own lives were in danger - but you couldn't get them to attend a peaceful anti-abortion rally. After all, they had saved their own skins - why should they worry about saving you kids - the X generation? They got peace and prosperity - and they left you kids to be boiled alive in salt water, or to have your body parts cut to pieces with a knife, your silent screams unheard by your parents' generation. They burned the flag and burned Chicago to save one hand of one man in their generation, but they turned away in silence while all ten men from your generation were killed in the most brutal way possible. A woman's womb became a far more dangerous place to live than any "killing field" in Southeast Asia!

President Reagan said:

The real question today is not when human life begins, but, what is the value of human life? The abortionist who reassembles the arms and legs of a tiny baby to make sure all of its parts have been torn from its mother's body can hardly doubt whether it is a human being. The real question for him and for all of us is whether that tiny human life has a God-given right to be protected by the law - the same right we have (ibid., p. 22).

Again, Reagan said:

I have said that anyone who doesn't feel sure whether we are talking about a…human life should clearly give life the benefit of the doubt. If you don't know whether a body is alive or dead, you would never bury it. I think this consideration itself should be enough for all of us to insist on protecting the unborn (ibid., p. 21).

Your parents' generation did not listen to the President. They did not stop the killing. When one man out of ten in their generation lost his hand, they marched, and rioted, and stopped it. But when, in your generation, all ten men were killed, they did nothing. They were like the people of whom it was prophesied:

"They shall have no pity on the fruit of the womb; their eye shall not spare children" (Isaiah 13:18).

III. Thirdly, the land is becoming desolate.

The word "desolate" means cheerless, dreary, miserable, ruined, lonely, gloomy, sad, miserable. There's quite a wallop in that one word - desolate. Yet I think it describes our way of life quite well. We have not always been desolate. When I was a child, Americans were a happy, robust, friendly people, like David and Marian Friesen, who opened their home to a bunch of kids who wanted to start a church - and their home literally became that church! They were the Norman Rockwell people, good neighbors who never knocked when they came to your house, because they didn't need to - they were like part of the family. I remember family doctors, like Dr. Erwin D. Pratt, who came to our house and sat by my bed, and then opened up his black satchel, mixed up a medicine and handed my mother the bottle - so we wouldn't have to go to the drug store. Dr. Pratt delivered me when I was born and was our family doctor.  Abortion? Are you kidding? Dr. Pratt never did one in his life - nor did any of his colleagues! Yes, I remember Dr. Pratt, and I remember David and Marian Friesen. But these lovely, old-fashioned people are gone now. The old sit silently in their houses - alone with television as their only companions. The young are off - one to a car - with headphones on to protect them from another human voice. They live alone, walk alone, eat alone, and die alone. We have become so self-centered that there is no room in life for anyone but self!

The American people know that human life begins at conception. Of course they know it! But they don't value any human life other than their own. Selfishness rules. Since the baby isn't me, it isn't important!

That's why the right-to-life movement failed. They kept proving that the baby was a human being. But the abortionists already knew that! One abortionist whispered to me, "I know it's human, but we have to do it." He meant that we "have to" get rid of the babies so we ourselves can be more prosperous. Yes, the abortionists knew it was a human life all along. That's why the pro-life movement failed. Instead of arguing that the baby was human, and showing grisly photos of the mangled bodies of aborted babies, they should have focused on what abortion does to the living - to the adults who allowed it. Since they are too self-centered to care about another human life, show them what abortion does to them - that's what we should have done.

1. A few scraggly white people moved to Colorado, while every major city was turned over to immigrants, many of them Muslim Arabs.

2. In California and then Texas more than fifty percent of the people became immigrants, many of them Muslim Arabs.

3. The few scruffy children we did allow to live were left alone so much that they became drug addicts, and many of them committed suicide, while the nation was being turned over to immigrants, many of them Muslim Arabs.

4. When the Arabs and other immigrants take over, do you think they will take good care of you and pay for your Social Security and Medicare?

How many brains does it take to figure out that killing Saddam Hussein isn't going to save America? He's over there! We're over here! And the whole thing is falling apart - here!

How many brains does it take to figure out that you can't kill off 42 million children without losing your nation - and your own life? Are we really so blind that we can't see this rather simple fact - if you destroy a whole generation of kids, you will be destroyed!

The English sent 5 million boys into the trenches in France during World War I. One million of them were killed. As a result, England lost the will to live and did not prepare for Hitler. They lost their Empire, and would have lost their island without Churchill.

America has allowed forty-two times more to die than England did. We, too, will lose our greatness, and since we have no island retreat, we will lose everything.

"Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils, And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols…and the land was polluted with blood…Therefore was the wrath of the Lord kindled against his people…And he gave them into the hand of the heathen" (Psalm 106:37-41).

IV. The local New Testament church is your only hope.

I saw an article in the L.A. Times last Wednesday titled, "Abortion Rate Lowest Since '74" ( Los Angeles Times, January 15, 2003, p. A-12). But I sat down with Dr. Cagan, a professional statistician, and we discovered that this is a "spin." The truth is that abortions haven't really declined at all. We killed off over 21 million young women, so they weren't here to abort babies themselves. The very slight decrease of about 1% comes from the fact that 21 million young women are dead - and thus not here to have abortions!

Personally, I don't think America is going to turn around. I think the only answer to the Abortion Holocaust lies in the local church. Therefore, I call you out of the world and into this church. The Bible says:

"Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty"
     (II Corinthians 6:17-18).

Young person, come out of a cold and dying America. Come into the warmth and love of this local church! Why be lonely? Come home - to church! And come fully to Jesus Christ. Ultimately, only Christ can save us, and only in the local church can we find the warmth and love that makes life worthwhile.

Without Christ, America is doomed! Come out of their doomed world into the church! That's why we say, "Why be lonely? Come home - to church!" Come to church - and then come to Christ. He died on the Cross to pay for your sins. He rose literally from the dead - and ascended into Heaven, to the right hand of God. Come to Christ and His Blood will wash away your sins, and you will live forever! Come home - to church! Come home - to Christ!
