The purpose of this website is to provide free sermon manuscripts and sermon videos to pastors and missionaries throughout the world, especially the Third World, where there are few if any theological seminaries or Bible schools.

These sermon manuscripts and videos now go out to about 1,500,000 computers in over 221 countries every year at www.sermonsfortheworld.com. Hundreds of others watch the videos on YouTube, but they soon leave YouTube and come to our website. YouTube feeds people to our website. The sermon manuscripts are given in 46 languages to about 120,000 computers each month. The sermon manuscripts are not copyrighted, so preachers can use them without our permission. Please click here to learn how you can make a monthly donation to help us in this great work of preaching the Gospel to the whole world.

FASTING TO SELL THIS OLD CHURCH BUILDING!

by Dr. R. L. Hymers, Jr.

A message given at the Baptist Tabernacle of Los Angeles
Wednesday Evening, May 1, 2019

“Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?” (Isaiah 58:6).

When you fast, you don’t eat food. A fast is a continual expression of inward prayer. Fasting shows that you are serious in your prayer.

Throughout history great Christians sought for the blessing of God while fasting. The great Reformers Luther, Calvin and John Knox all fasted. Jonathan Edwards fasted for 22 hours before preaching his famous sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.” That sermon was used by God to ignite the First Great Awakening. The founders of the United States fasted to receive the blessings of God.

I believe it is Biblical to call for a fast. A fast is an act of faith. Why fast? Because fasting secures God’s blessings. I am asking those of you who are well enough to fast each Friday until 7:00 at night. Be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day, at least 6 or 7 glasses of water. If you are used to drinking coffee, you may get a headache if you don’t drink some. But I don’t think you should drink more than one or two cups.

We are asking you to fast one day each week on Fridays, from the time you get up until 7:00 at night. Then eat a light supper before going to bed. Don’t eat spicy foods or heavy meat dishes. Eat a bowl of soup and a couple of pieces of toast, and maybe a glass of milk.

God has led us to start a new church in the San Gabriel Valley. We have already found a good building for the new church, but first we need to sell this building on Hope Street. So that is what I want you to center your fast on – the main thing to pray for when you fast each Friday, starting this Friday. Several times during the day stop for a moment and pray for us to find a buyer for this old building. Center all your prayers on selling this old building. We are fasting to find a buyer for this old building – and to find a buyer soon!

If you have any health problems please see your doctor before you fast. You may want to just pray for us to sell the building if the doctor says not to fast. Dr. Jerry Falwell was correct when he said, “No one should be forced to fast” (Fasting: What the Bible Teaches, page 31).

Before you eat a light meal, at about 7:00 Friday night, spend about 15 minutes praying for us to sell this building soon! When you fast on Friday be sure to take a few minutes throughout the day to pray for this request. Jesus said, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you” (Matthew 7:7). “Ask,” “seek,” and “knock” means keep on asking, seeking and knocking in prayer for this request. Keep on praying several times on Friday.

Jesus said, “Nothing shall be impossible unto you. Howbeit this kind [of problem] goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.” (Matthew 17:20, 21). May Christ bless you as you pray for God to help us sell this old building on Friday! I love you. I will be praying for you as you fast and pray for this request! Dr. R. L. Hymers, Jr., Pastor Emeritus. Call me if you have any questions or problems at (818)352-0452 or (818)645-7356. Great Spurgeon said, “All our strength lies in prayer.”
