A SERMON PREACHED AT THE WEDDING OF
SERGIO MELO AND YAZMIN BALTAZAR

preached by Mr. John Samuel Cagan

A sermon preached at the Baptist Tabernacle of Los Angeles
New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2016

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

Sergio and Yazmin asked me to speak before their wedding. Sergio and Yazmin were not born into easy lives of luxury and safety. They both understand how difficult life can be. That is why they both came to realize the absolute importance of Jesus Christ. Without Jesus, neither Sergio nor Yazmin would have made it to the place in life where they could be married and have a family. Jesus saved Sergio’s life. Jesus saved Yazmin’s life.

Today many people are depressed and anxious. People wander through painful experiences in life without much hope. The average person may turn to some escape for relief from the difficulty of life. They may try to escape into the Internet, into partying, into drugs or drinking, or into anything that will prevent them from feeling the pain that accompanies life. But God does not want you to live that kind of life. God loves you, and “God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

God loves you so much, that he gave His only begotten Son, that if you believe on Jesus, you will have everlasting life. Jesus is the hope that Sergio and Yazmin found. Jesus saved their lives. Jesus can save your life as well. Tonight I am honored to speak to you about Jesus, my Saviour and my Lord.

I. First, who is Jesus?

We just celebrated Christmas, the day when Jesus was born into this world. Jesus was a real person who lived a real life. Many people think Jesus was a spirit, but they are wrong. Jesus had real flesh and real bones. If Jesus was a spirit, he could not have been nailed to a cross. Jesus was a real man. But Jesus was more than just a man. The Bible says that Jesus is the “only begotten Son” of God. Jesus is the Second Person of the Trinity. He is God the Son. He is of the same essence as God the Father. That may seem complicated, but it is true. God is a Trinity. He exists in three Persons. Jesus is the Second Person. He has been “the only begotten Son of God” for all eternity. In the fullness of time

“God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law” (Galatians 4:4).

Jesus existed as God the Son before He was born into flesh in the womb of Mary. Jesus was then born in a human body. Yet, Jesus is, and always has been, the “only begotten Son of God.” The Bible says,

“There are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one” (I John 5:7).

You must know who Jesus is. Otherwise you can never understand what He did on the Cross. If Jesus was only a man, then His death on the Cross has little meaning today. But while He was a man, He was more than a man. He was God in human flesh. “The only begotten Son of God”– the Second Person of the Trinity – God the Son. And God in human flesh died for you.

II. Second, why did Jesus die?

Just as there are many theories of who Jesus is, there are many theories regarding why He died on the Cross. Some say Jesus was a victim. But the truth about His death is given in the Bible. Jesus did not die on the Cross by accident. Jesus did not die on the Cross against His will.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave His only begotten Son…” (John 3:16).

Focus on the words, “he gave his only begotten Son.” Jesus was not crucified as a victim. God “gave his only begotten Son”! The Roman soldiers drove nails through His hands and feet, and the priests and Pharisees cried “Crucify him! Crucify him!” It is true that they did those things. But they were only instruments God used. God did not just allow Jesus to be crucified. God sent Jesus to be crucified. The Bible says,

“It pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin” (Isaiah 53:10).

That is what the Bible means when it says, “he gave his only begotten Son.” That is what the Bible means when it says “It pleased the Lord to bruise him.” God Himself put Jesus on the Cross! God put Jesus on the Cross for you and for me. The Bible says,

“Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures” (I Corinthians 15:3).

God sent Jesus to die for our sins because there was no other way for our sins to be forgiven. Through the Blood of Jesus our sins are forgiven and forgotten by God.

“Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood” (Romans 3:25).

With sorrow and pain in his heart, God the Father sent Jesus to the Cross to pay the penalty for your sins.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son…” (John 3:16).

III. Third, how can you be saved by Jesus?

Jesus died on the Cross to pay the full penalty for our sins. But you must trust Him in order to be saved. You cannot be saved by trying to be good. You cannot be saved by having some experience in your mind. You cannot saved by saying a prayer. You cannot saved by believing the Bible or believing in God. The Bible tells us exactly how to be saved. Our text says,

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

“That whosoever believeth in him should not perish.” Salvation comes by believing in Jesus. Jesus suffered on the Cross to pay the price for your sin. There is nothing left for you to do except trust Him! Trust Jesus by faith!

My mother was born in El Salvador. I am Hispanic on my mother’s side. I know that many of us who are Hispanic believe that Jesus is angry with them. Whether they are Protestant, Evangelical, Pentecostal, or Catholic – Hispanic people tend to believe that Jesus is angry with them. Most Hispanics do not see Jesus as the Saviour who loves sinners. Hispanics often see Jesus as a judge who is angry with them. But that is not what the Bible teaches.

Most Hispanics think of “Cristo.” And that “Cristo” is a “Christ” who is angry with them and will judge them. But that is not the Jesus of the Bible! The “Cristo” they think of is not the Jesus of the Bible! The real Jesus loves sinners!

The Bible tells us about a prostitute who came and kissed the feet of Jesus. A religious man was sitting next to Jesus at the time. The religious man thought to himself that Jesus could not be a prophet. He thought that if Jesus was a prophet, he would have known that the woman was a sinner and condemned her for her sin. But that is not what Jesus did. Jesus knew all about her sin. But Jesus was not angry with her! Jesus did not judge her for her sin. Instead, Jesus forgave her sin. When she came and kissed His feet, Jesus said, “Thy sins are forgiven” (Luke 7:48). Jesus accepted her. Jesus loved her! Jesus saved her! Throughout the Bible, Jesus was never angry with sinners. Jesus loves sinners!

Earlier Mr. Griffith sang, “Jesus is the friend of sinners, friend of sinners, friend of sinners. Jesus is the friend of sinners. He can set you free.” Jesus is not angry with you! Jesus wants to save you from sin and judgment. Jesus will save you, if you trust Him! Trust Jesus and you will be saved! Jesus loves you! I pray that you will trust Jesus soon. Amen.
