ALL THINGS ARE NOW READY!

by Dr. Kreighton L. Chan

A sermon preached at the Baptist Tabernacle of Los Angeles,
Lord’s Day Evening, January 15, 2012

“Come; for all things are now ready”
(Luke 14:17).

What great privileges we Christians enjoy! Our text says,

“Come; for all things are now ready.”

What an invitation! And Christians have heard that call before. In fact, we have heard it twice. We heard it first when we were invited to this church.

“Come; for all things are now ready.”

We came, and the people in church were ready for us. It was clear that we were welcome. They had prepared a big meal. They were friendly and made us feel at home. We were glad that we came to church. Then we heard the invitation again when the Gospel was preached. We were called to come to Christ for salvation. And we came to Him and were saved!

By the grace and power of God, we responded to these calls. We came into our church. And then we came to Christ. His Blood washed away our sins. We were converted. We heard, “Come, for all things are now ready.” We came to Jesus and found that it was true!

“All things” refers to salvation. It also refers to the great inheritance and blessings of every true Christian. We do not need to wait to go to Heaven to experience them. They are ready for us to enjoy now. None of these blessings come from man. None of these blessings come from the world. These blessings come only from God through Christ. The Lord Jesus Christ said that God

“…sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready” (Luke 14:17).

I. First, “all things” which the Christian has now.

All things that Christians possess are now ready. We have the forgiveness of our sins. Oh, the joy of sins forgiven! Oh, to have a clear conscience and be without guilt before God! What a great comfort to know that none of our sins are found in God’s “books.” Instead, our names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. The Bible says,

“Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered” (Romans 4:7).

Praise the Lord! Our sins have been forgiven. They have been covered by the Blood of the Lamb. Yet we don’t deserve it. As sinners we were guilty before God. We deserved judgment and Hell. But Christ took our sins and guilt away through His Blood. And if we sin Christ’s Blood is there for us.

“The blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin”
      (I John 1:7).

Oh, the power of the Blood of Christ to wash away our sin! Glory to His name!

And we not only receive the forgiveness of sins. We also receive the righteousness of Christ. We have complete salvation in Christ!

Also, we have been adopted by God. Through Christ we have become part of God’s family. We have become the sons of God. The Bible says,

“And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father” (Galatians 4:6).

We enjoy fellowship with God through Christ. With our new natures, we cry out to God in prayer for our every need. When we were lost, we were enemies of God. Now we call Him our Heavenly Father! Christ has reconciled us, has brought us together with God. Glory to His name! What a blessing to be part of the family of God! What a blessing to be “accepted in the beloved” (Ephesians 1:6).

Also, we have eternal life. When we were lost, we had a great fear of death. We thought all there was to life was what we could see, feel, hear, or touch. What was important to us was our family, friends, pleasure, and possessions. Death meant an end to all these things. Death also meant uncertainty about what would happen to us after we died. But praise God, we don’t fear death anymore! That’s because Christ delivered us from the fear of death. And in place of fear, He has given us everlasting life. The Bible says,

“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life”
       (John 3:36).

We have everlasting life now! “All things are now ready”! Brothers and sisters, we have eternal life now! Before conversion our soul was dead to God and eternal things. But we have been made alive through Christ. Jesus said,

“Whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die”
       (John 11:26).

Have you thought deeply about that? We shall never die! Glory, Hallelujah!

We have eternal life now on earth. When we die, we continue our everlasting life in Heaven! We will have eternal joy and happiness. No more death. No more sorrows. No more tears. Christ has gone before us to prepare our heavenly mansion. We will worship God and Christ forever and ever! Amen.

Also, we have the privilege of prayer. We have instant access, 24/7 to Almighty God! He is all-powerful. He is also our Heavenly Father who loves us. You can ask Him for anything. God’s throne is a Throne of Grace. He welcomes you to pray, and He will not refuse you. Oh, the great privilege of prayer! Consider God’s love which moves Him to do good to you. The Bible says,

“He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?”
      (Romans 8:32).

God gave His Son that you could have life. If He did that, would He keep any good thing from you? No, so we can be bold in our prayers. Jesus said,

“Ask, and ye shall receive” (John 16:24).

What a great promise in the Word of God! We have many burdens and many needs. Let us pray for them. If we ask, we shall receive. Have you seen this? Oh, then have you prayed and asked God to draw your family and friends to come to church and be converted? “Ask, and ye shall receive.” Oh, the great privilege of prayer. “All things are now ready.”

Also, we have the Bible and its precious promises. Be like the man in Psalm 1,

“His delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night” (Psalm 1:2).

Don’t take your Bible for granted. Many persecuted Christians in China and other countries do not have Bibles. But you have the Bible. You must read it, and not only read it but obey it. If you do this, Christ said that you are like a “wise man which built his house upon a rock” (Matthew 7:24). If you love the Bible you will become solid Christians, and “nothing shall offend” you (Psalm 119:165). God’s Word will be a “lamp” to your feet and a “light” to your path (Psalm 119:105). Read it and you will be blessed. “All things are now ready.”

Also, we have God’s providential care. The Bible says,

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).

It is comforting to our hearts knowing “all things work together for good.” No matter what trials you go through, you can be confident that God is in control. He will work it out for your ultimate good and for His glory. In times of joy, it is easy to rejoice in God’s providence. We give God the glory for all His goodness. But we should also rejoice in God’s providence in times of trials. As Christians we must expect difficult times. In fact the Apostle Paul said,

“All that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution” (II Timothy 3:12).

God has a purpose for all that happens in our life. During times of trouble you should remember that “all things work together for good.” The Apostle Paul rejoiced in God’s providence during his trials,

“For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us” (Romans 8:18).

Paul’s present suffering led to his future glory and honor. That’s God providence. Wicked men and the Devil himself can be against us. But we can rest in God’s providential care. The patriarch Joseph said to his brothers who sought to kill him,

“But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good” (Genesis 50:20).

Christian, let your Heavenly Father shepherd you through life. Trust Him fully. Let Him lead you through good times as well as the bad. The Psalmist said, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want” (Psalm 23:1). Rest in His providence. For we know that all things work together for good! Let God be glorified! Hallelujah!

“Come; for all things are now ready.”

As a Christian you have come to Christ and have enjoyed “all things.” Some of these are salvation, forgiveness of sins, adoption into God’s family, eternal life, Heaven, prayer, the Bible, and His providential care. “All things are now ready.” We have all these blessings through Christ. Oh, that I might shout His glories forever – through Christ, through Christ. All things through Christ! We have all things through Christ!

II. Second, “all things” which the lost can have now.

Sinner, “all things,” salvation and all these wonderful blessings, can be yours. But you can only receive them through Christ. You must have Christ. Our message to you tonight is,

“Come; for all things are now ready.”

First, come back to church. We want you to enjoy coming to our church. And we will do our best to help you feel good about coming. You will find happy and friendly people here who love you. We love you because God loves you. We love you because Christ loves you. We have wonderful meals together. We have a lot of fun together. And we want you to come all the way into our church. Come next week Saturday evening. Come back next Sunday morning and next Sunday evening. “Come, for all things are now ready.”

And then come to Christ. All things are now ready for your salvation. He died on the Cross to pay for your sins. He rose physically from the dead to give you life. He ascended to the right hand of God the Father to pray for you. Come to Christ. Jesus paid for your sins on the Cross. He shed His Blood so your sins could be washed away. Come to Christ. You will be saved from your sins and experience “all things,” all these blessings, through Christ. May you do this in Jesus’ name.

Oh, may you be moved to bring in the lost. You have a great opportunity coming up. We will be celebrating Chinese New Year’s next Sunday evening. Let us fill this place with Chinese people! Bring in a lot of Chinese people. You don’t have to be Chinese to bring a Chinese person. Bring a Chinese person from your work or school. If you have been working on someone don’t slack off on them. Call them again and then again. Tell them you really, really want them to come to the Chinese New Year’s banquet. Tell them what a great time they will have. Tell them about all the friendly people that they will meet. Remind them not to let anything get in the way of coming. Tell them not to make a change of plan. Call and arrange for other people to come. Call other family members. Call other friends. Do it! Do it! Let Dr. Cagan know who you will bring next week Thursday or next week Saturday. Or you can call Dr. Cagan. We need to know how many people are coming. Do it! Do it!
