YOUR URGENT NEED OF SALVATION

by Dr. Kreighton L. Chan

A sermon preached at the Baptist Tabernacle of Los Angeles
Lord's Day Morning, November 9, 2014

“Behold, now is the day of salvation” (II Corinthians 6:2).

If you were faced with death, that’s all you would think about. Imagine you have that deadly Ebola virus. You would be desperate to find a hospital. You would be afraid. Your heart would beat strong and fast. You would shake and sweat with fear. And you would feel a great urgency to be cured.

And you are in danger right now. Not from Ebola but from the judgment of God.

The Bible said, “God is angry with the wicked every day” (Psalm 7:11). He is angry at your sinful heart. He is full of wrath for your many sins. You are in danger of going to Hell right now. Yet you have no fear of God. You have no fear of His judgment. Why aren’t you afraid? It’s because you’re spiritually dead. The Bible says you are “dead in trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1). You can feel fear for your body. But because you are spiritually dead, you feel no fear for your eternal soul. What a dangerous situation you’re in! Our body and this life are important. But they are only temporary. In just a few short years we will all be dead. But your soul will live on forever. Christ said,

“And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10:28).

Christ said to fear God and not to fear man. He also said our souls are much more important than our bodies. Oh, do your best to take care of your body. Try hard to live a long and healthy life. I am a medical doctor. And it’s my business to take care of my patient’s bodies. But I am also a minister of the Gospel. And I want to say, “Do not neglect your eternal soul!” Believe me when I say that you are under God’s wrath. And your soul is in danger of going to Hell.

And this all-powerful God is against you. You cannot come to Him to ask for mercy because He’s angry with you. The Bible said,

“Your iniquities [sins] have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you” (Isaiah 59:2).

What will you do when you stand before God? How can you save yourself from God’s anger and wrath? You can’t do anything. You’re in a hopeless situation. But what you cannot do, Christ can. The Apostle Paul said,

“Now then we are ambassadors for Christ … we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God” (II Corinthians 5:20).

I speak for Christ. Be reconciled to God! Being reconciled to God means that God is no longer angry with you. It means to be at peace with God. It means to be brought near to God. Sinner, you have no peace with God because your sin angers Him. Your sin separates you from Him. But Christ can bring you to God. He can do this by being your Substitute. The Bible said,

“For he [God] hath made him [Christ] to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him [Christ]” (II Corinthians 5:21).

Through faith in Christ the sinner is made righteousness, and Christ is made our sin. Christ gives us His righteousness, and He takes away our sin. What a blessed exchange! We receive these great gifts through Christ’s substitution. But at what great cost to Christ! In His passion He suffered God’s wrath for our sin. We deserved the scourging. We deserved the crown of thorns. And we deserved to be nailed to the Cross to die for our own sins. But Christ bore all the anger and wrath of God for us. The wounds of Christ were made as punishment for our sin. Oh, the love of Christ that brings this great
salvation. This is salvation full and free! But I warn you,

“Behold, now is the day of salvation” (II Corinthians 6:2).

I. First, you need salvation from the anger and wrath of God.

You will not feel the need for salvation that Christ offers unless you have some sense of the wrath of God. You will not seek to be saved from a threat that is not real to you. Oh, may the words of the Apostle Paul awaken you to your terrible judgment. He wrote,

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men” (Romans 1:18).

Sinner, you are ungodly and unrighteous. And God is angry and filled with great wrath for your sin. God is perfect and holy. The Bible said of God,

“His work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he” (Deuteronomy 32:4).

God is the standard for what is right and good. And God demands that you keep His standard of perfection. The world does not set the standard. Your friends and family do not set the standard. Even the best people in the world do not set the standard that God requires. You comfort yourself because down deep you think you are good. But you base your thinking on a false standard. God thinks you are a wicked sinner. And His opinion is the only one that really matters!

Many of you know that the Bible says your heart is depraved. But you feel nothing of its ugliness. You are not disgusted by the wickedness of your heart. What the Bible says about your heart are just meaningless words to you. It hasn’t troubled you. You don’t really feel that you are a wicked sinner. Think then of these wicked sins that come out of your depraved heart. They show your heart’s true nature.

“Fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection…and covetousness, which is idolatry: For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience” (Colossians 3:5-6).

God’s anger and wrath are upon you for these vile sins. And there are many other sins that come from your heart that show its wickedness. There is the sin of not ever thinking of your sinful heart. Yes, that’s a terrible sin. There is the sin of refusing Christ repeatedly when the Gospel is preached to you week after week. And then there are the sins of putting your family before God and loving pleasures more than God. These sins do not make you a sinner. No, these sins show that you are a wicked sinner. The mention of these sins should make you ashamed. Hearing them should convince you of the great depravity of your heart. And God is right to be angry and to be filled with great wrath at you. Hell awaits sinners that remain under God’s wrath.

I spoke with my mother last week. She was upset with what I had said in a sermon when I gave my testimony. In that sermon I said that as a young person I felt miserable, desperate, and lonely. I said that I felt a great emptiness in my soul. I didn’t know God, and I had no peace. My mother said, “You blew me away when you said that. I thought, ‘Who is this person?’ This was not my son. My son was a good and happy boy. And he has always known God and Christ.” She told me, “Jesus has always been in your life. You have survived through prayers to Jesus.” I told her, “Mom, I know that Jesus has blessed me greatly, but I really didn’t know Him personally. I believed in God and have even felt His presence at times, but He felt distant from me.” I told her, “I knew I was not right with God, but I didn’t know why. Then when I heard my pastor, Dr. Hymers, preach the Law of God, I felt dead in sin. I felt wicked. And I felt that God was angry with me. I knew then why I felt empty. I was empty because of my sin. Then when Dr. Hymers preached the Gospel, I felt I must have Christ. I must have His Blood to wash my sin away. The experience was so powerful and so very real to me. The Spirit of God took a hold of me and drew me to Christ. My sins were washed in Christ’s Blood. It was only then that my emptiness and sadness left me. I felt peace with God.” But my awakening began with real conviction of sin. If you never feel conviction of sin, you will never experience Christ in conversion.

And many of you that are lost think just like my mother. You believe in God, and you believe in Christ. But you’re not converted. You see the many blessings of God in answer to prayer in your life and in the lives of others. You believe that God has performed a miracle in helping “The Thirty-Nine” pay off the building – $16,000 a month for 20 years. You believe in evangelism, in bringing young people into our church. You believe in and love the pastor. And you’re behind him and want our church to succeed. Many of you give faithfully in tithes and offerings. You believe in our Internet ministry and it being a great blessing to the many people around the world. You feel blessed of God to be part of our church. And you feel like the church is your home. But you also believe that you’re not that bad. You think, “I’m not like the people outside the church that don’t make time for God.” You think, “This is my church, I will help it grow, and I will be saved some day.” The Devil has given you a false sense of comfort. And you don’t feel sinful. You don’t feel that God is angry with you. And so you have no urgency to be saved. All these blessings will be a curse to you if they stop you from having conviction of sin. Some of you are even praying for revival. You pray for others to come into the church and be saved. But you are not saved. And you have no burden praying for your own soul. In some sense you are a part of our church. But you have no part in Christ. Oh, friends, you’re lost! You’re lost! You’re not convicted of sin. You sense nothing of the wrath of God. And so I must warn you. Danger! Judgment is coming! Wake up! Wake up!

“Behold, now is the day of salvation” (II Corinthians 6:2).

II. Second, you need salvation now.

Many have used the sovereignty of God to comfort them in their sinful laziness. You reason that if God must do everything in salvation, then I don’t need to do anything. But that’s the wrong attitude to take. Yes, God is sovereign. And yes, salvation is of the Lord. But you must not remain spiritually asleep. You must not be comfortable in your sin. You will never receive salvation that way. Rather, the Bible says to strive to enter Christ. It says to be violent for your salvation. Salvation in Christ must become the most important thing in your life. You must treat salvation from the wrath of God urgently, or you will never come to Christ and be saved.

You need salvation now because God’s wrath toward you only grows by your delay. The Apostle Paul wrote,

“But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath” (Romans 2:5).

God’s anger and wrath is already strong against you. But the longer you delay salvation in Christ, the more you sin against God. And His wrath toward you grows and grows. Your place in Hell only gets worse and worse. Every sermon that you hear without trusting Christ brings more of God’s wrath upon you. God’s anger builds toward you when you refuse to think of Christ’s passion, His death on the Cross, and the Blood that He shed on the Cross for you. Your condition is made worse each day you stay lost and refuse to come to Christ.

“Behold, now is the day of salvation” (II Corinthians 6:2).

You need salvation now because the Spirit of God may never speak to you again. The Prophet Hosea said,

“Ephraim is joined to idols: let him alone” (Hosea 4:17).

Oh, how you take it for granted that the Gospel is preached to you week after week! You treat the counseling you receive in the inquiry room as nothing important. And you think lightly of any conviction of sin you receive from the Spirit of God. God left Israel because they continued to join themselves to sinful idols. And the Spirit of God will leave you if you continue in your sinful rebellion in refusing Christ. And if the Spirit of God never visits you again, you will never be able to trust Christ and be saved.

“Behold, now is the day of salvation” (II Corinthians 6:2).

You need salvation now because you will go to Hell when you die. The Bible said,

“And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments” (Luke 16:23).

The rich man lived only for the pleasure of this life and thought nothing of his soul. He thought nothing of his sin. And he thought nothing of Christ. He has spent the past 2,000 years in Hell regretting his sinful neglect. And you, like the rich man, have no fear of Hell because you have no sense of God’s wrath. If you felt you deserved Hell for your sinful depravity, you would urgently seek salvation in Christ. You do not feel the wrath of God now for your sin, but you will feel it in Hell. Oh, wake up and come to Christ now. Don’t risk waking up in Hell where it will be everlastingly too late for you.

“Behold, now is the day of salvation” (II Corinthians 6:2).

You need salvation now because delaying will only make it harder for you to trust Christ. Think of the many reasons why this is so. Resisting conviction of sin from the Spirit of God will further harden your hearts. It will make it easier next time for you to resist conviction of sin. Soon you will never experience conviction of sin. The Gospel will become a common thing. And you will tune it out completely from your thoughts. Some have already done this. How easily then is the Devil able to snatch away the Gospel from your hearts! By delaying salvation in Christ some now feel that being lost is not so bad. You have gotten used to it. You don’t mind going to the inquiry room again and again. See how your delay has hardened you. And some through delay have become filled with such unbelief that you have given up on ever being saved. Oh, you need salvation now before you remain hopelessly hardened and lost forever.

You need salvation now because you may never have another chance to trust Christ. The Bible said,

“Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth” (Proverbs 27:1).

By your delay in coming to Christ you boast of another day and another opportunity to come to Christ. How foolish! You have no idea what will happen tomorrow much less next Sunday. You are gambling with your eternal soul. And you will lose. God has given you this day to come to Christ. Don’t throw it away. Don’t assume you will have another day to come to Christ. Many in Hell have thought they would have another day to come to Christ. But they were wrong. And it’s too late for them now. Don’t make the same mistake. Come to Christ now.

Some of you feel that you can’t do anything right to obtain salvation. Every attempt you make fails again and again. Perfect. You’re half right. Yes, give up on yourself. But don’t give up on Christ! He is your only hope. Now as a convinced helpless sinner Christ can save you. You will never have your heart prepared perfectly. You may never be prepared more than you are now. And as you delay, you risk losing your soul. You need Christ. You need Him now. Cast aside all your doubts. Cast aside all your fears. Come to Christ as you are. Come to Christ now.

Christ died on the Cross and shed His Blood to wash your sins away. He rose flesh and bones from the grave to give you life. He is in Heaven at the right hand of God. Don’t remain under the wrath of God. Escape to Christ! Throw yourself upon Him. He will receive you. He will wash your sins away in His own Blood. Amen and Amen.
